OC Republican Delegation Spreads Renewed Optimism for GOP Victory
Orange County's delegation to the bi-ennial California Republican Legislative Convention and to the organization meeting of the California State Republican Central Committee returned home with renewed determination and enthusiasm for a GOP victory in the coming general election.
Committee Chairman C. Willard Key, Fullerton, in commenting on the meetings, said, "We were gratified to note that Republicans from every corner of California share the optimism and determination of the party organization in Orange County. We were particularly pleased at the election of our own Assemblyman Bruce Sumner (74th District) to the positions of both temporary and permanent secretary of the Legislative Convention.

Gardener's Check List
By the California Association of Nurserymen
1. Plants in containers, especially hanging baskets, need extra attention from the hose. Daily watering is in line for most of them. A little fertilizer too!
2. Keep chrysanthemums staked and remember to pinch off the side buds if you would have the biggest blooms on top where they belong.
3. Hibiscus in full bloom can be transferred from the nursery container to a tub on your sunny deck or patio.
4. Crabgrass controls can be applied again this month to catch evasive members of the family that lived through your first application.
5. It's not too early to set out annuals for winter bloom. You'll find flats of snapdragons, stock calendulas, violas and pansies among others at local nurseries this month.
SQUIRRELS REALLY GO FOR phone cables. They like to gnaw on them. Trouble is, this leaves holes that can interfere with your service. So to keep little teeth away, phone people put metal roofs over the most tempting cables or wrap them with steel tape. Squirrels don't like this, but it sure saves on repair costs—one more saving that helps us give you the most for your telephone dollar.

County Bread Winners Show More for Week’s Labor Than Most Other Areas
Are wage earners in Orange County better off than those elsewhere? How much can they buy, after an hour’s work, in the form of consumer goods?
With both the cost of living and the wage scale moving in the one direction — upward — in recent years, it is hard for a worker to determine how much progress he has been making, if any.
Only the length of the hour has remained constant, and the amount of goods that can be bought with an hour’s work the only measures of economic values.
By this standard, the Orange County breadwinner is in much better shape than those in other areas. For his efforts, he can obtain more of the necessities and luxuries of life.
A recent survey revealed that the average Orange County worker, last year, could buy a quart of milk after 7 minutes on the job, a rayon, street dress after 4 hours and 13 minutes of work, a pound of rib roast after 19 minutes, a pair of men’s leather shoes after 6 hours and 26 minutes and a dozen eggs after working 16 minutes. The figures are based on average local earnings and market prices in 1959.
While most consumer items can be bought for less, in terms of worktime, than in former years, there are some exceptions. One of them is the cost in hours of a popular-priced car. It has gone to 6 per cent since 1950. Most other creases were in the cost of services, such as a doctor’s visit, a repair job and a haircut.
Nationally, according to one study, despite larger tax loads, despite the decline in the value of the dollar and despite higher living costs generally in the past decade,

Oleanders Give Color To Garden
You’d have to look long and hard to find a climate too hot for oleanders. Most members of the California Association of Nurserymen are convinced that these tough customers would grow in a blast furnace.
Do you doubt it? Then hop in a car and ride up or down our state. Oleanders have been widely used to landscape freeways in some of our hottest counties, where they show their cheerful faces to one and all.
It is heat, in fact, which makes an oleander thrive. They are sparse bloomers in some of our coastal climates. Don’t shy away from them if you garden in a fog belt, however, since the foliage itself is worth growing for screens and hedges.

Advice on Veterans Benefit Checks Given by Veterans Service Officer
Veterans, their survivors or dependents were offered some sound advice today by Veterans Service Officer Ben Liebermann on occasional problems which arise in the receipt of benefit checks from the Federal Veterans Administration.
Most important, he said, persons receiving checks to which they know they are not entitled should either return them or write to the Veterans Administration for an explanation. Don't cash the check and spend it in such cases; sooner or later it will have to be repaid.
On the other hand, if a veteran receives a check which is smaller in amount than that to which he is entitled, he may accept it and cash it without in any way waiving his right to claim the rightful amount.
A veteran's widow who remarries cannot continue receiving death pension, but the pension rights of the veteran's children continue in larger amount. However, any increase due the children cannot be granted by the Veterans Administration until the new certificate of marriage has been received and the Veterans Administration adjusts and closes the widow's own pension account.
