Wrong Beneficiaries on GI Policies
Can Create Some Tragic Situations
Sad cases continue to come to light in the matter of outdated beneficiaries a GI insurance benefits, Veterans Service Officer Ben Liebermann reported today.
Despite repeated reminders and suggestions from his office, and from both Federal and State veterans agencies, too many veterans "just never get around" to listing the proper beneficiaries to their GI policies.
The regrettable result all too often is that the veteran's wife and family cannot collect the proceeds of his GI insurance in the event of his death. Why not? Simply because some years before, he designated beneficiaries who at the time were those he wanted to get his insurance money. But that was before he married, or before he was divorced, or before he had children.
For example: a veteran may have divorced and subsequently remarried. But his ex-wife still is listed on his policy as the principal beneficiary. Unless the veteran had instructed the Veterans Administration Insurance Center in Denver, Colorado, to change the beneficiary to the name of his present wife, she can collect nothing from his insurance. The former wife receives it, as the beneficiary of record.
Or possibly the veteran was unmarried when he last designated his beneficiaries. He listed a parent or a relative or friend as the Governor Pleads For Mass Voting
Governor Edmund G. Brown joined Secretary of State Frank M. Jordan today in a strong plea to all non-partisan officials in California to aid the intensive drive for registering California voters before the Sept. 15 deadline.
"Today, when people behind the Iron Curtain have lost the right to vote in free elections, we ask your cooperation in working to see that every citizen of California shows how much he values this precious right by registering and voting," said the letter.
It was signed jointly by the Democratic Governor and the Republican Secretary of State.
The law requires a voter to be an adult citizen with a year's residence in the State, 90 days in the county and 54 days in his voting precinct.
A new voter may register before he is 21, if his 21st birthday falls on or before next Nov. 8. Newly married women are required to re-register under their legal names.

MWD Assured of Water Contract
Governor Edmund G. Brown said this week he will present a firm contract to the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California within a matter of days for delivery of water from works to be constructed with the $1.75 billion bond issue on the November ballot.
"We will present a contract the State will be willing to approve and I would be willing to sign," the Governor said.
"I want to make it clear that this contract will represent the careful and considered judgment of the State, but it need not be considered final if the directors of the District have major points of difference on which they wish to continue negotiations," he added.
The Governor urged that sectionalism be set aside in considering the water bond issue and said he is confident the directors of MWD "recognize our common needs as well as their special problems."

Rubber not only provides soft cushions of air for motorists, it also aids driver safety and the orderly flow of traffic. Many traffic marking paints now in use on busy streets and roads throughout the country are based on Pileolite synthetic rubber resins produced by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. The rubber-based paints also may be exposed to traffic within 10 to 20 minutes after application.
