As Bobby Fox, a partner in the business says, "Loaded with pulpwood, we drive over stumps and potholes you'd think would tear the truck to pieces. These trails would shake the cab off an ordinary truck, but not our Chevy. We can average an extra load a day ... make $45 to $50 a day more with this Chevy than we can with the others." In every weight class these Chevies are doing more work at less expense than trucks have ever done before. Drive one at your Chevrolet dealer's. It's an experience that could pay you big dividends. "That 6-cylinder enging really performs," says Bobby Fox. "It's got the lugging power we need in the woods and walks right along with a full load on the highway." CHEVROLET STURDI-BILT TRUCKS dealer's Truck-Value Roundup! THERS ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Time Ptoves All Things Sermon Preached by LEROY MILLER, Pastor of Faith Lutheran Church "Time will tell," we say. It's a statement that says what we are saying in our theme. Time will tell, indeed it will! For TIME PROVES ALL THINGS. It is the great revealer that strips away all sham and reveals things as they are. We tend commonly to think of time as our enemy. It moves inexorably onward—"Time waits for no man." It does not adjust itself to us and our plans. We must always adjust ourselves to it and make our plans within its containing limits. "Time, like an ever-rolling stream, bears all its sons away." There is so much to do, so little time in which to do it. And so many people are always fighting against time. We need to change our thinking, I'm sure, or time can be our friend. "Time's on my side," says an ungrateful son who wants the wealth of his parents. He need but wait. His parents will die; their wealth will be his. Time is on our side, though it's certainly not in this sense that we mean this. Rather, it is on our side in the sense that it proves all our values. With the mere passage of time the true worth of what we valued is revealed. For one thing, there are many things that come, as it slowly, inexorably passes, proves to be worthless. There are friendships that time proves false. True friendship ought to grow deeper through the years. That which does not we can be sure is false, for false friendships will not survive the passing years. Time proves our loves. We think of the puppy loves of our children—oftentimes parents are quite amused. But this is a part of growing up, and it helps to prepare for and to make a person capable of that mature love which marriage requires later on. Puppy loves flame up quickly, and die out nearly as quickly. Merely the passing days prove them to be less than the real thing. But finally there will come an experience that is different, a love that does not fade with time but that grows ever deeper and greater and more enduring. This is one of the very compelling reasons for a long courtship, young as he stands near the end of a disastrous life need but read the Old Testament book of Excelsiastes. The things that Solomon had thought good had melted away with the years and he stood finally betrayed and disillusioned in old age. And it was such a tragedy, for it need not have been so. Solomon made such a good beginning. He began with God. God came to him at the beginning of his reign over Israel and told him to ask what he would and He would give it to him. Solomon asked but this: wisdom to rule God's people aright. One can admire Solomon for that. He began with God. But what good is this if one does not also end with Him? The end is even more important than the beginning. As the years passed, Solomon exchanged God for the pleasures of this world. He became proud of his wisdom, boasting: "I have acquired great wisdom, surpassing all who were over Jerusalem before me..." But later he wrote bitterly: "I perceived that this is but a striving after wind. For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow." "I said to myself," Solomon continues, speaking now as a man who knows better of the days of reckless youth, "Come now, I will make a test of pleasure; enjoy yourself. But behold, this also was vanity. I said of laughter, it is made, and of pleasure: What use is it? I searched with my how to cheer my body with wine... I made great works... I bought male and female slaves... I have also great possessions of herds and flocks... I gathered for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces... I got singers and many concubines... Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had spent in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after the wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun." There are many things for which men spend all of life which, when time has run out, are proven to be worthless. Some things lose value through the mere passage of time. They become outmoded, they Time proves our loves. We think of the puppy loves of our children—often times parents are quite amused. This is one of the very compelling reasons for a long courtship, young people, and why you ought not marry in haste. Yet time test your love, for it will do just that. Time proves love's quality, and there are some things that we thought to be love which time proves to be false. Consider your life up to the point at which you have arrived now. Do you still consider the same things important that you did ten, twenty or more years ago? I would imagine that you probably agree with St. Paul: "When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; but when I became a man, I gave up childish ways"—and also childish things and childish values. We no longer treasure the things we did as children. For time has proved them worth far less than we had imagined. Perhaps the one who discovered this most forcefully was King Solomon. We associate Solomon with wisdom—"As wise as Solomon," he say. But Solomon was not so wise as we think. Time proved his wisdom false.
