CG Issues Boating Accidents Report
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In its first official tabulation of boating accidents made under the Federal Boating Act of 1958, the United States Coast Guard today revealed that between March 10 and Dec. 31, 1959, more than 2,000 accidents claimed the lives of 488 persons, injured 875 others and resulted in property damage of more than $2,500,000. The figures were made public under the Boating Act which required that, starting Mar. 10, 1959, all boating accidents must be reported.
In releasing the figures, the Coast Guard pointed out that the data processing system used is based on a poll taken among all those concerned with boating safety to determine the type of information which would be most useful in the related fields of education, regulation and enforcement.
During the period covered by the report, relatively few states were participating in the motorboat numbering and accident reporting program established by the Federal Boating Act of 1958, which did not include any incidents involving boats.

New Anaheim Mart
George Raft, one of Hollywood's most fabulous and famous motion picture stars, is an active vice-president of the Consumers Mart of America, which opens it $3,-500,000 shopping city in Anaheim on Aug. 25.
Raft became interested in the Consumers Mart as a result of his long friendship with J. A. Keilly, president of CMA. Fascinated by its entirely new concept in retail merchandising, Raft has assumed a major responsibility in the operation.
Raft emphasizes he still has much to learn about his entirely new role as a business executive, which he is undertaking at the age of 64. Although he sits in on all business and promotional planning sessions, offering guidance in many areas, Raft says his biggest thrill is greeting his thousands of fans in the huge shopping marts.
During the period covered by the report, relatively few states were participating in the motorboat numbering and accident reporting program established by the Federal Boating Act of 1958, which did not become effective nationally until April 1, 1960. There are now 38 states participating, and it is anticipated that this cooperative effort will produce more significant national statistics, including how many boats are in use, according to size, construction and propulsion. Also included will be some data on boating accidents on certain waters exclusively under state jurisdiction.
The next report will be released on or about Oct. 1, 1960, the Coast Guard said.
Raft says he expects to devote every spare moment to the CMA venture, hopping from Chicago, Oak Lawn, Illinois, to Anaheim and San Francisco, where Consumers Mart of America will have its operations.
Beta Rho Chapter, Epsilon Sigma Alpha, will hold its annual swim party and luau Aug. 13. Husbands and rushes will be special guests of the event. A box supper will be featured at pool-side followed by an evening of swimming, dancing and games.

14 Million People Get Today, 25 years after the original Social Security Act became law, over 14 million men, women and children are receiving monthly old-age, survivors, and disability insurance benefit checks totaling $900 million a month.
Marking the 25th anniversary of the signing of the original Social Security Act by President Roosevelt on Aug. 14, 1935, Ralph A. Dillman, district manager of the Santa Ana social security office, noted that 25 years ago about half of all persons aged 65 or over were mainly or wholly dependent on relatives and friends. Today, over 72 per cent of a much larger aged population are either drawing old-age and survivors insurance benefits, or will be eligible to draw them when the worker retires.
Originally designed to provide only old-age insurance benefits for workers in commerce and industry, these provisions of the social security program have been expanded and improved over the Gardener's Check List

Gardener's Check List
By the California Association of Nurserymen
1. Water, water everywhere is the gardener's motto for August. Be sure to give plants a good soaking, not just a sprinkle.
2. Any lawn looks better if neatly trimmed around the edges. Edgers make the job easy.
3. Start working up a seed-bed now if you plan to plant a new lawn next month. Dig in plenty of manure while you're at it, as well as a weed and weed seed control which your nursery man can recommend.
4. Roses and shrubs need a liberal feeding this month if you haven't given it already. Work and water it in. (Before you use any fertilizer, read the directions.)
5. Don't fret about powdery mildew on tuberous begonias. It's easy to control with spraying. Be sure spray is recommended for begonia mildew.

Non-History Beet Acreage Available
California has received an allotment of 19,000 additional acres of non-history sugar beet quota from state that will not plant their 1960 proportionate shares, according to R. Cecil Farnsworth, chairman of the Orange Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee. Farnsworth stated that all growers who received an allotment for the 1960 crop are eligible to apply for an additional proportionate share from this new allotment for late-planted beets.
Such beets, he said, must be planted prior to Nov. 1, 1960, and while they will qualify for payment under the Sugar Program, they will not count toward the grower’s history for future proportionate shares. He explained that this is because the history credit has already been placed to the records of those to whom the allotment was first made—in some other state, in this case—but who have surrendered their unplanted acreage so some other grower may use it.
