"Each year, more Americans die from the stings of the little insects buzzing in our gardens and parks than from bites of all venomous reptiles combined," according to the magazine published by the American Medical Association. "Most medical authorities are convinced that severe reactions to insect stings are the result of an allergy," the article said. No one knows exactly how many people are allergic to the stings of insects, but in the opinion of one allergist, "severe reactions to insect stings occur more commonly than is generally supposed." "In fact, it is possible that unrecognized cases account for some of the sudden deaths attributed to heart failure and heat prostration in he insect season," Dr. Harry Mueller of Boston said. The insects that cause most of the reactions are the honeybee, bumblebee and three kinds of wasps—yellow jacket, hornet, and Polistes—although about 25 other insects have been reported to produce allergic symptoms in man. Because their nests are hidden and they are easily irritated, yellow jackets account for most of the insect stings. Honeybees and bumblebees are much less likely to sting. If you are buzzed by a bee or United Fund Report 1960 Allocations General chairman of the Anaheim-Western Communities Unified Fund Jay DeDapper announces the share each of the 15 participating agencies will receive from the 1960 expected budget of $290,000: Crippled Children's Relief Assn. $934; Girl Scouts, $30,800; Bee Scouts, $36,000; Visiting Nurses Assn., $2,281; Catholic Welfare $14,756; Orthopedic Hospital, wasp, never flail at it with your arms. Walk slowly away. Stinging insects are more apt to attack fast-moving object because they are sensitive to air movement and sudden motion. To keep yellow jackets and bees from gathering at picnic tables spray the area with a repellent chemical. WE'VE MOVED! ANAHEIM SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION 187 WEST CENTER STREET • ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA • KE 5-2158 Police Science Course Is Scheduled At Orange Coast College This Fall Career opportunities in law enforcement will be offered to students for the first time this September by Orange Coast College when the new police science two-year major is introduced. The course, which is open to both men and women, has been developed in cooperation with the chiefs of police of Orange County who have requested that Coast offer the course. It is designed to give a broad, fundamental training to prepare the student for any field in law enforcement work. Graduates of the two-year major will receive the associate in arts degree. A cadet training program in cooperation with police departments of the community will be part of the course. “This cadet program will give the student a wonderful opportunity to observe the operations of a police department at the same time that he is studying the principles and theory of police science.” Police Chief John Upson of Newport Beach observed. “Such a course will be a big help in recruitment of officers,” Upson said. “Many young people out of high school would like to get into police work, but they are too young and departments cannot take them until they are 21 years old. With such a college course available at Coast, these people can get an early and adequate start on their education.” Upson said. The course will also permit current police personnel to take courses which will upgrade them. Mail Registrations OK for Adult Course Beginning Aug. 5, students who plan to attend Orange Coast College adult education and extended day college courses this fall may register by mail for those courses for which a material charge will be made. Mail registration for these courses will be accepted through Aug. 17, according to Dr. Thomas A. Blakely, dean of adult and extended day education. The courses are identified in the adult education fall catalog of course which includes a registration blank printed on the last page. Copies of the adult education catalog are available at libraries in the community or by contacting the adult education office at tk college. Theta Upsilon Alumnae Assn.
