Anaheim Freshman To Enter Cal Poly
Bruce Lee Bayer, 614 Carleton, Anaheim, has been accepted as a freshman marketing and sales major at the Kellogg campus of California State Polytechnic College, Pomona, school officials have reported.
Bruce graduated from Anaheim Union High this spring, and he will enter Cal Poly for the fall quarter begining Sept. 19. His first week will consist of orientation activities, tests, physical examination, and registration.
Though badgers usually live on plains and deserts, they can swim easily and rapidly, according to the National Automobile Club. They have been observed swimming as far as half a mile from shore.

Vacationers Must Emphasize Safety With School Out
The beginning of the school summer vacation season adds greatly to the responsibility of all motorists, the Automobile Club of Southern California cautioned today.
"Both children and motorists must be made aware of the additional hazards presented during the summer when youngsters spend more of their time playing outdoors," stated Robert J. Cheney, Auto Club Public Safety Department manager.
Here are some of the steps Cheney suggested for avoiding hazardous situations:
Re-emphasize the safety knowledge children have been taught in school.
Know where your children are at all times and make sure they don't play in streets or other hazardous locations.
Encourage children to use parks and recreational facilities or their own yards for play. Check with trict for information concerning your local park and recreation disits program.
Check private swimming pools in your neighborhood for proper safeguards including adult supervision and adequate fencing.
When visiting the beach, children should be accompanied by an adult, swim near a lifeguard station and use the buddy system.
Do not permit hitch hiking.
Motorists must use extra ca

Life-Saving Steps To Avert Drowning
Your swimming companion ends himself in water too deep or him. He can't stay afloat.
He goes under—but rescuers reach him quickly and pull him to their boat. You climb in, too.
Seconds are precious. Victims of water accidents die from lack of oxygen—suffocation. Lack of oxygen can spell permanent brain damage. Too long without oxygen means—death!
What would you do?
"Start artificial respiration at once," advises the National Safety Council, hub of the safety movement in America and concerned with all forms of safety.
The Council goes along with the system of artificial respiration recommended by many authorities—the mouth-to-mouth method.
"The mouth-to-mouth method has the advantage of providing immediate pressure to inflate the victim's lungs. And it enables the rescuer to get more accurate information on the volume, pressure and timing of efforts needed to inflate the victim's lungs than are afforded by other methods." say experts of artificial respiration.
When should you use artificial respiration?
"Anytime someone stops breathing—because of electric shock, suffocation in a discarded refrigerator or in a plastic bag, or a near-drowning," said Ralph Kuhli, the Council's director of public safety.
Here is how you can perform the life-saving mouth-to-mouth artificial respiration, he said:
1. Wipe out foreign matter in the mouth with your fingers or a cloth wrapped around them.
2. Tilt the victim's head back so the chin is pointing upward. Pull or push the jaw into a jutting-out position.
3. Open your mouth wide and place it tightly over the victim's mouth. At the same time, pinch the victim's nostrils shut. Then breathe air—at a normal rate—into the victim.
4. Remove your mouth, turn your head to the side, and listen for air coming out. Repeat the blowing effort.
For an adult, blow about 12 breaths a minute. For a child

Old Abe Mine, located in the new deserted town of White Oaks, New Mexico, is reported by the National Automobile Club to have been discovered in the 1880s by escaped outlaw John Wilson.
Tiring of his brushes with the law, Wilson decided he had had enough of gold and gave his claim to two friends for nothing. Shortly thereafter the two friends sold the mine for $300,000.

Commission To Adopt New Pheasant Policy
At its meeting in Los Angeles last month the California Fish and Game Commission adopted a new pheasant policy which incorporated the closing of two State game farms — Imperial, near Srawley, and Valley Center, near San Diego.
The Commission then instructed the Department to purchase about 800 birds from private breeders, on a trial basis, to replace the output of the two game farms.
Yountville will continue to rear 25,000 pheasant chicks a year. These chicks will be offered to conservationists, non-profit hunting clubs and dog trainer groups, which will raise the pheasants to maturity at their own expense. Yountville will also continue to be used for raising other exotic birds for experimental planting in game deficient areas of the State.
Mileage Hogs Ruin Auto Vacation Trip
If you want to enjoy that auto vacation trip and get home safely, don't bite off more mileage than you can chew. In other words, don't be a 'mileage hog."
The “mileage hog”—the vacationing driver who sets an excessively high quota of miles for each day's driving—is a menace to himself and other highway vacationists.
The desire to roll up X-hundred miles before stopping for the night lures drivers into taking chances they never would take under normal circumstances.
