EENS TEST THEIR SAFETY SIGN LANGUAGE! Two of the 200,000 California teenagers who soon will experience their first vacation driving are quizzed about the highway signs they will encounter, by Carol Lane, women's travel director of Shell Oil Company (above, left). "Highway signs are the safety language of the road," says Miss Lane, founder of the National Carol Lane Traffic Safety Awards for Women. Each shape is recognizable from a distance, and conveys an urgent message to which new and experienced drivers alike must respond quickly." The National Safety Council ins Miss Lane in urging you to make these signs — diamond (caution), octagonal (stop), round (railroad crossing), and rectangular (speed rules and directions) — the first signs of a safe summer!

Expert Discourages Early Teenage Dates
Dating is dangerous for young teenagers, says Marriage Counselor Clifford Adams who advises parents in the July Ladies' Home Journal on how they can check too-early dating.
Fifteen-year-olds benefit from dating, he says, but it is hazardous for younger teens who haven't developed standards and judgment. Their dating becomes competitive, exploitive, destructive, and is likely to result in embarrassment at best, and quite possibly in serious trouble.
Because of the "all-the-others-do-it" pressures, some parents cannot control their teenagers dating, but they can modify and guide it, Dr. Adams says. He recommends that parents give in when they conscientiously can, but stand firm when necessary.
He warns parents not to put their child on the defensive by expressing disapproval of certain acquaintances. Parents should be interested in their child's activities but should not demand a play-by-play account.

Anaheim Resident Home-Life Writer
Two words heard about as often as any others in today's home are "Hurry Up!" declares Elaine Bierauer, 1342 S. Nutwood St., Anaheim, in July "Home Life," a family magazine of Southern Baptists.
Perhaps the most tragic factor in the hurry-up pace of modern family life, says the 'Home Life' writer, is that parents are passing this error on to their children. Most children are geared for aisurely, dawdling existence that allows them to get the most out of life, but impatient parents constantly prod them to join the rush. The Anaheim writer urges parents to take a cue from their children and slow down to live longer and better.
