Los Angeles St ANAHEIM Summer Base Goodyear Blimp Stationed in OC LOS ANGELES — MAYFLOWER II, the only commercial lighter-than airship (blimp) currently in service in the United States, has been assigned to spend the summer in California. Now enroute from its winter base at Miami, Fla., the blimp is scheduled to arrive at Orange County airport where it will base while in this area, on June 1, according to Robert W. Maney, vice president and general manager of the Western Division of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., operators of the aircraft. Tentative plans call for MAYFLOWER II to operate in the Los Angeles area until August 26; visit San Joaquin Valley cities remainder of the month; base in San Francisco from August 30 to September 26, then depart for a tour of the midwest enroute east. Visits to San Diego and several other Southern California communities also may be made while the ship is operating from the Orange County airport. FIRST OPERATION of a Goodyear blimp in Los Angeles was that of the "Pony Blimp" in 1919 and 1920 when the Goodyear-Los Angeles plant was under construction. In 1929 the VOLUNTEER was based here and a hangar to house the ship was erected on the company's property at Central and Florence avenues. In 1929 the VOLUNTEER was based here and a hangar to house the ship was erected on the company's property at Central and Florence avenues. VOLUNTEER operated here continuously until 1939 when it was replaced by the RESOLUTE. Immediately after Pearl Harbor the RESOLUTE went into emergency harbor and anti-submarine patrol service for the U.S. Navy. The VOLUNTEER returned to Los Angeles in 1946 and operated until late in 1949, when the ship went east and operations here were suspended. BETWEEN JUNE 1954 and September 1956 the ENTER-PRISE based here and last visit of a Goodyear blimp to the area was by the RANGER during the four summer months of 1957. All of the former blimp visitors have been retired from service. MAYFLOWER II was manufactured in 1959. MAYFLOWER II is a modernized an dslightly enlarged version of the same class of blimp as most of the earlier visitors. It is 150 feet long, 41 feet in diameter and stands 52 feet from its single landing wheel to top of its control surface. Its envelope, or "gas bag" has a capacity of 132,500 cubic feet and it is inflated with non-inflammable helium. Pilot in charge of the airship is Captain Verner L. Smith, who has over 20,000 hours of blimp flying experience, making him world's senior lighter-than-air, or blimp pilot. He has been flying blimps for more than 30 years, four of which were with the U.S. Navy in World War II. He is a captain in the U.S. Naval Reserve. YET! Bill for Norfolk ed Disneyland la 4.
