WONDERFUL WORLD by Waloman By building his own road as he went along, the great Carthaginian general Hannibal led a 50-mile long army across the Alps in 218 B.C. to defeat a much larger Roman force and make history. More recently, travel-minded Americans hacked a 26-foot wide roadway from New York to Boston which they named the Boston Foot Road. To keep carriage wheels from slipping free trunks were set in the earth, making travel a hazardous nightmare. Today's highways are designed for speed and comfort relying for safety on protective guard railings, barriers, and signs made of galvanized (zinc protected) steel for years of corrosion-free service. Centralia Kindergarteners Take Centralia Kindergarteners Take Ride on 'Toot-Toot'; Enthralled By BETH KROESEN Kindergartners from Mira Linda school in Centralia School district—100 strong—took a ride on the train. They thought about myriads of things which only alert, agile minds of five and six-year olds could think of. One little fellow set the keynote for the day when he popped into his room bright and early. He beamed at his teacher as he stated gleefully, "This is a happy day!" Name tags were pinned on each set of children before they were turned over to the care of a father or mother, wearing a tag of corresponding color. Two school buses loaded the beginners, 32 of whom had never ridden a school bus before as many of the children are "walkers" from homes near the school. Grown-ups who ride the freeways probably never think of the variety of sights and sounds there are to impress a learning youngster. Schools, factories, an occasional farmer tilling the soil, dairies, rivers and the close proximity of fast-moving over- and trucks and trailers carrying their products to market, all press in to claim attention and fascinate the youthful observer. Arriving at Union Station, the conduct of the pupils brought favorable nods and comments from onlookers and the special agents who escorted the group across the vast waiting room of the station, through the gate marked "San Diegan" and into the cavernous tunnel leading to Arriving at Union Station, the conduct of the pupils brought favorable nods and comments from onlookers and the special agents who escorted the group across the vast waiting room of the station, through the gate marked "San Diegan" and into the cavernous tunnel leading to the trains. All the color of railroading was captured as the train gained momentum through the switching yards, past side-tracked freight trains, then flashed by the picturesque little yellow railroad stations at Rivera, Los Nietos, Santa Fe Springs and Buena Park, reaching speeds up to 80 miles per hour. With only a few seconds allotted for the stop at Fullerton, everyone was off the train and into the school buses again in record time with all colored tags accounted for and enough memories of the trip to last each one a life-time. The train ride was the first for 60% of the lads and lasses. Twenty adults made the trip besides the three kindergarten teachers, Mmes. Verlyn Hurd, Beth Johnson and Georgennie Hunter. Others were Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hackmann, Mr. and Mrs. M. K. Holmes, Donald Gage, and the Mmes. Rene Den- Gov. Brown Slates La Habra Address Gov. Edmund G.
