Knight Vicious and Untrue Former Governor Goodwin J. Knight, this week's speaker at the Chamber of Commerce banquet at Disneyland Hotel, recently was attacked by an Orange County newspaper in a most vicious manner. They insinuated that he participated in a profit which ran into the millions in the sale of a real estate tract in Rossmore. THE TRUTH of the matter is that Governor Knight was not associated with the firm at the time this newspaper contends that the fabulous profits were made. Governor Knight may well stand on his distinguished record for integrity in government and as a most able Chief Executive. His past record is unmatched in the history of his State and his able administration deserves the plaudits of the people of the State rather than a despicable attempt to besmirch his character. The welcome that he received at Anaheim Chamber of Commerce banquet demonstrates quite convincingly that the people of this county regard this gentleman in the highest esteem. Locally-Built Missile Monitors Put In Operation Hughes Systems Installed at Bases in Europe; Revolutionize Defenses ILLERTON, Cal., April 5 — Missile Monitor, the first mobile electronic air defense missile fire detection system, is now being deeded to operational sites with U.S. Army in Europe, off of the Army and Hughes Craft Company announced today. This completes deployment of first Missile Monitor begun at a year ago with the MSQ-18 battalion level elements of the system and will provide initial operational test information concerning on-site capabilities of the system. Designed to operate on a 24-hour alert, the Missile Monitor employs digital computer techniques for rapid and accurate information handling. The Missile Monitor system monitors the old grease-pencil setting and voice-telling methods to provide intelligence to air defense units. For the first time the field army has a transistor-digital control complex. The "heart" of Missile Monitor is a Corps-level air-defense command post which provides a comprehensive and accurate picture of both friendly and hostile aircraft throughout the defended zone. The command post consists of Hughes-built electronic equipment mounted in standard Army trucks and vans. The "eyes" of Missile Monitor is Frescanar, a unique three-dimensional data radar developed by Hughes for the U.S. Army Signal Corps, which provides range, bearing and altitude simultaneously on hundreds of airborne targets with only one antenna, receiver and transmitter. Conventional radars require two or more complete systems to provide 3-D information on a limited number of airplanes. Other trailer-mounted units at the command post include a radar equipment trailer which houses the transmitter and receiver of the Frescanar, a radar processing center, weapons monitoring center, missile batteries in the Missile readiness reports, coordinated Monitor network. From the weapons monitoring center, the main line of electronic conversation leads to four or more remote battalion-level operations centrals mounted on 2½-ton trucks. There, battalion commanders observe the air battle on two large radar display screens. Each operations central has electronic lines of communication connecting directly to four or more Nike or Hawk missile batteries via Hughes-built coder-decoder group equipment, also mounted on 2½-ton trucks. These units may be dispersed over a wide area as required. Battalion commanders may stand by as missile firing orders are transmitted direct from the Corps-level weapons monitoring center, or may assign missile batteries to specific targets as desired to meet a changing tactical situation. The coder-decoder group is an unmanned unit which converts the digital target assignment and position data to analog form for use by currently operational missiles. Information can be sent from the weapons monitoring center to the missile battery in the millionth part of a second, eliminating the element of human error in the The Missile Monitor system minimizes the old grease-pencil setting and voice-telling methods to provide intelligence to air defense units. For the first time in field army has a translistor-digital control complex which permits the commanders all echelons to observe and influence the air battle," Lt. General John C. Oakes, the Army's deputy chief of staff for operations, said. Missile Monitor can pass information many times faster than usual voice-telling systems and much greater accuracy and delay. Designated AN/MSG-4 by the Army, the Missile Monitor can detect track and store information large numbers of airborne targets within a vast surveillance range. Targets are automatically tracked by the digital counter while weapon-assignment information is flashed through the work to the missile batteries. Here, Hawk or Nike missiles may be launched to destroy the attack aircrafts. The Missile Monitor is a field-based system capable of being modified to keep pace with the rapidly changing requirements of military science. It not only effectively directs the fire of toes missile weapons to meet today's offensive threats, but is designed for easy modification to cope with future threats as well," Harper Brubaker, a Hughes vice-president, said. The digital computer employs a "track-while-scan" technique to produce data on a large number of targets. The digital track data generated by the computer is stored in a Hughes-developed memory drum, then converted to analog form for display as track marker symbols on the detector tracker consoles. This digital data, including the target's range, bearing, height, and identity, is flashed to the weapons monitoring center by means of an automatic data link. The weapons monitoring center contains four large-screen consoles to provide Corps-level command personnel with a complete graphic picture of the ground-to-air battle in the zone of defense as well as the status of all Nike and Hawk terries to specific targets as desired to meet a changing tactical situation. The coder-decoder group is an unmanned unit which converts the digital target assignment and position data to analog form for use by currently operational missiles. Information can be sent from the weapons monitoring center to the missile battery in the millionth part of a second, eliminating the element of human error in the old voice-telling technique, and assuring rapid destruction of attacking airplanes. Each operations central and missile battery has its own relatively short range radar which feeds information into the system. Thus, in an emergency, a fragmented system could continue to meet an aggressive threat effectively. Lines of electronic communication are arranged so that elements of the system may communicate with each other. Information flowing from the air-defense command post through operations central to the battery includes track data on the assigned targets, and weapons assignments. The battery sends a constant flow of information back through operations central to air-defense command post on firing...but Daddy said the TRUST DEPARTMENT at the Friendly Bank has complete Trust Service... TB CHEST X-RAY PROCEDURE explained to county officials. Cy Featherly (left) chairman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, and Sheriff James Musick (right) are shown with Raymond R. Ross, M.D. (center), member of the case finding committee for the Orange County Tuberculosis and Health Association as he describes the simple procedure involved when residents have a free chest x-ray taken. The portable chest x-ray unit is presently located in the Orange County garage: 3th and Sycamore Sts., Santa Ana, and is available to the public from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The chest x-rays, which are given free of charge to those over 15 years of age, are part of the community service program which is paid for by the annual sale of Christmas Seals. Last week all of the prisoners in the Orange County jail were x-rayed. Featherly, in pointing out that approval by the Board of Supervisors was required to make the garage available for the chest x-ray unit, stressed the importance to the health of the county of chest x-rays and urged that those who haven't had one taken in the past year do so while the unit is located in Santa Ana. Local Music Teachers Judges At Festival Faculty members of the Central School of Music, 145 W. Ball Rd., Anaheim, will aid in judging the more than 7500 contest entries, ranging from solos to large bands, at the fifth annual Western States Accordion Festival to be held in the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 22-24. The event, sponsored by the Accordion Association of Southern California, brought over 6000 youthful contenders from 6 to 21 years old to vie for prizes last year. A larger throng is expected this season, according to Anthony Aretta of San Gabriel, Festival director, and Kay Kalle of Santa Fe Springs, AASC president. All accordion players and groups are eligible until the closing date, June 22. Does away with sway! Wide-Track widens the stance, not the car.
