The project, a six story replica of a mountain height, will be the home of the Calico Mining Co. The project, which will include wooden mine tunnels and a mine ride, will cost $500,000 when completed. The mine will have battery powered engines pulling passenger-laden ore cars through the tunnels from ground level to the top of the man-made mountain. Visitors will see underground lakes and pools, an underground above ground waterfall which will cascade 3,000,000 gallons of water a day. This will be accomplished by using only a minimum amount of water, and tumbling it down the face of the waterfall time after time by means of a recirculating pump, but it is guaranteed by the designers to give the impression of an endless flow of tumultuous mountain spring water. There will be authentic mine shafts, complete with "dummy" animated miners at work in the tunnels. Designed and partially owned by Budd and Ray Huribut, completion of the new attraction is expected by early summer. The mountain will be located just across the tracks from the park's railroad depot. Another attraction taking shape near the Calico Mine is the farm's new shooting gallery. It will be the most advanced shooting range in the world, with all-electronic equipment designed especially for Knott's. By the engineered use of electronics, the actual sounds of exploding powder, the spat of the bullet, even the recoil of the rifle, will seem realistic. Yet no bullets will be fired. Electronic targets will be hit by sharp-eyed junior marksmen firing tomorrow's electronic bullets—the counterpart of the Buck Rogers ray-gun of comic strip fame. The electronic techniques and equipment were engineered by Knott working with local electronics firms, after several California college electronics departments termed the revolution- Utt Predicts Nixon Will Do Battle Soon "When the time comes Nixon will come out like a racehorse," predicted U.S. Congressman James B. Utt Monday in his first press conference here since returning from Washington. Utt said Vice President Richard Nixon is a believer in political timing and is pacing himself until the proper opportunity to open his campaign presents itself. Congressman Utt said that the AFL-CIO is preparing to launch a tremendous anti-Republican program. He said an organization is being put together so that one union member will be in contact with at least 20 families prior to the fall elections. Utt described this program as a blueprint to wipe out the Republican Party. Utt said Gov. Nelson Rockefeller's early withdrawal kept Nixon from being able to launch an active campaign.
