Gordon, '13 has been ordered to trial for the lying of Maggie Holyoke, 56, but may beat the rap on an insanity plea. Gordon is to be arraigned at 10 a.m. April 1. He killed his mother, the wife of the former city engineer, George Holyoke, after she chided in March 9 for not being able to hit the family car running. "I intended to kiss her goodnight and shoot her in her sleep she would wake up in heaven," Gordon at his Anaheim-Fullerton Municipal Court hearing. During the preliminary hearing appeared that the prosecution well as the defense had agreed that Gordon, a mental institution patient for 11 years, was insane and should not stand criminal trial. Anaheim Det. Sgt. Harry Bryant, called to the stand by the prosecution, gave this version of statement by Gordon: GORDON HAD COME to California with purpose of reforming a mother in mind and to "stop or scolding." The mother and son argued for two weeks prior to the shooting and on the morning Mrs. Holyoke's death had an argument over Gordon's inability to get the family car to running. Angered the son chased the mother in the house, slapped her Walter Knott Given M&M Award For Work In Employee Relations Walter Knott, founder of Knott's Berry Farm, Buena Park, has been honored by the Merchants and Manufacturers Assn. for the significant contributions he has made to the improvement of employee relations and to greater understanding of the American economic system. The mother and son argued for two weeks prior to the shooting and on the morning Mrs. Holyoke's death had an argument over Gordon's inability to get the family car to running. Angered the son chased the mother in the house, slapped her hand and then got a revolver and began shooting at her. Mrs. Holyoke leaped through a bedroom window and raced toward a neighbor's home for help with Gordon in pursuit. One shot apparently struck her back of the neck. She ran across the street and collapsed on the wound in a neighbor's caveway. Gordon followed, placed the gun on her head and twice pulled the trigger on empty chambers. Another shot missed the woman and the last fatal bullet entered her head. "I didn't plan to do it that way," Gordon was reported to have said. "I would have liked to have been more merciful." Bryant testified that when he questioned Gordon as to why he killed his mother, the man often giggled. Gordon stated that he had "examined" his mother and decided that she was "emotionally and mentally ill." He then declared: "I did it for the rest of the family." There are six other children in the family—all reportedly doing well in life. Other Recipients Herman H. Inman, Nic-L-Silver Battery Co.; Gerald L. Jones, National Cash Register Co.; Charles B.
