Thousands of Workers Illegal
Despite an abounding prosperity in this country, hundreds of thousands of workers—many right here in Southern California—are being illegally paid less than $1 per hour, though they are covered by Federal minimum wage laws.
The Federal Wage-Hour Law administered under the Fair Labor Standards Act, sets $1 per hour at the Federal minimum wage and time-and-a-half for overtime based on the employee's regular rate for time worked in excess of a 40-hour week. This is for all persons working in jobs covered by the act, which take in some 24 million workers out of the total U.S. civilian labor force of 69 million.
The U.S. Labor Department has cited instances where wages are low as 35 and 40 cents per hour were paid. Investigations for the fiscal year 1959 revealed a total minimum wage underpayment of $22,403,116, involving 177,900 workers throughout the country.
The Labor Department reported that minimum wage underpayments amount to $77,381 for the Los Angeles area in 1959. A shortage in overtime compensation for the area totaled $973,169, nearly doubling the amount turned up in 1958.
Are these figures indicative?
CHICAGO.—Mrs. Gerry Reed, 30, 1734 E. Elm St., Anaheim, California, today reigned as queen of the Pacific region super market checker/cashiers.
Mrs. Reed is employed by the Alpha Beta Food Markets, Inc., whose headquarters are in La Habra, California.
Mrs. Reed was chosen as one of ten regional winners by judges who reviewed the work performance, accuracy, customer courtesy and job attitudes of checkers representing Super Market Institute member markets throughout the United States, its possessions and Canada. Duane Burdick was director of the Alpha Beta campaign which placed her in the regional competition.
Wife of a construction worker and mother of two children, Vicki Lynn, 8, and Sherry Lee, 7, Mrs. Reed finds time in her busy schedule to serve with the P.T.A. and on the election board. She has been a checker for the 52-store chain for four years.
The ten regional queens will be flown to New York via United Air Lines on April 26 for a whirlwind tour of Manhattan. Following their two-day stay at the Hotel Roosevelt, the candidates for the title of International Checker of the Year will go to Atlantic City for their final performance tests at the 23rd Annual Convention of Super Market Institute.

Thousands of Southland Workers Illegally Underpaid
are an abounding prosperity in this country, hundreds of thousands of workers—many right here in Southern California—are illegally paid less than $1 per hour, though they are covered by federal minimum wage laws.
Federal Wage-Hour Law, enacted under the Fair Labor Act, sets $1 per hour as general minimum wage and a half for overtime based on employee's regular rate for work in excess of a 40-week. This is for all performing jobs covered by which take in some 24.3 workers out of the total civilian labor force of 69.5.

These figures indicative of the true extent of existing viola-mates it is able to investigate only questions?
The Labor Department estimates between 5 and 6 percent of the establishments covered by the law, but it does select firms where violations are most likely to occur. A Department survey projecting statistic for a given year in which $18.8 million in underpayments were reported estimated that if all the firms could have been checked the figure would have reached $100 million.
