148 Will Die of Cancer Here in 1960; Local Crusade Chairman Says Cancer has been the most pressing medical problem in America today, according to Mrs. Jackson Mose, 2114 W. Forest Ln., crusade chairman of the American Cancer Society's April Cancer Crusade in Anaheim. "This," she said, "is because not as many lives are being saved from this disease as could be. Half of all cancers could be cured if detected and treated in time, but at present only one patient in every three survives cancer by more than five years." "Only through research can the remainder of cancer's victims hope to conquer the disease. This is why we are asking Orange Countians to give generously to the 1960 Crusade—to help us make our goal of $105,896" Mrs. Moses said. "Some 85,000 live will be last needlessly to cancer in the United States this year," she added. In Anaheim alone, she said, there will be an estimated 148 deaths in 1960. Mrs. Moses pointed out that California is a major area of national cancer research. She said that normally 60 per cent of the money collected during the Cancer Crusade remains in the state for use in locat projects of cancer control. However, because national funds of the Society are invested so heavily in California cancer research activities, the ACS actually appropriates the state for use in local projects than it receives in this state during its April fund saalsing drive. In addition to sponsoring a vast national research program, the ACS conducts year-around programs of public and professional education and provides free services for cancer patients. Mrs. Moses said many volunteers will be needed to make the forthcoming ACS Neighbor-to-Neighbor Cancer Crusade a success again this year. She asks those wishing to help call her at her residence or the American Cancer Society, Orange County Branch, 848 N. Borch St., Santa Ana.
