A2-Anaheim Gazette Anaheim, Calif., Friday, Jan. 29, 1960 Azores Boy (Continued from Page 1) language hurdle in teaching reading is the confusion of words which sound alike but have different meanings. Mrs. Elving corrected Tony when he mispronounced a word by saying, "That is 'killed,' dear" So Tony read the sentence again, "killed deer." PICTURE DICTIONARY Because he sometimes does not have a notion what he is reading about, a picture dictionary is helpful. Of tentimes the whole class benefits from Tony's reading lesson, as in the same story about whales. The teacher and class took time to share their surprise when they found that an elephant looks like a midget next to a whale, since only a small part of the mammal shows above water. Bigger than prehistoric dinosaurs, the whale breathes with lungs, has hair, and the babies, called calves, drink milk from the mother. Christmas was as exciting a season for the Portuguese lad as for the American children. In his native Terceira in the Azores, Tony remembered Saint Nicholas, who did everything for the children there which Santa Claus does here. Tony always went to church on Christmas eve in the Azores, hung up his stocking before going to bed, and went to church again on Christmas day. Then there was bountiful food, starting with a special sweet roll in the morning made with cinnamon and sugar and a feast of meat and outside Water Use Spirals as Anaheim Population Expands Orange county imported 157,744 acre feet of Colorado river water during 1959 at a cost of $2,561,-393. Of this Anaheim, Fullerton, Santa Ana, Coastal Metropolitan Water district and El Toro Marine base paid $1,268,765 for softened water. ANAHEIM used 2,800 acre feet and Fullerton, 5,213 acre feet. Since 1950 Anaheim imported 52,788 acre feet of Colorado river water. Juvenile Crime (Continued from Page 1) annexations and some incorporations of cities The department, he said, continued to carry on a vast anti-juvenile delinquency campaign in both the cities and county territory and he estimated that 75,000 booklets telling youngsters how to stay out of trouble were distributed. The city building department announced that $52 million building permits was issued during the year as compared to $6 million in 1958. December's total was $6 million which included permits for Scuander Food Co.'s proposed $900,000 plant and the $1 million Charter House motel-hotel. Nature has many good uses for the nose and one of them is not sticking them into other people business. Overheard: "I bet you say that to all the girls." "Oh, no, I don't see all the girls." Los Angeles St. ANAHEIM Tony remembered Saint Nicholas, who did everything for the children there which Santa Claus does here. Tony always went to church on Christmas eve in the Azores, hung up his stocking before going to bed, and went to church again on Christmas day. Then there was bountiful food, starting with a special sweet roll in the morning made with cinnamon and sugar and a feast of meat and fowl, vegetables and sweet confections for the big dinner. Tony tries hard to understand and participate with the others in the room. He managed to bring ribbon and sequins from home to make special gift plaques Mrs. Elving planned for Christmas. But he failed to get the message to bring a top from a cottage cheese carton until the deadline was nearly reached and Mrs. Elving declared sternly, "Manana." The Salvadors live at 6461 Orange avenue. Tony has two sisters, Mary Alice, 16, in junior high school and Mary Lou, 18, who attends Western High. SHOP TONITE 'TIL 9 P.M. The gunman, police said, hid in a walk-in freezer while employes closed the store. Store Manager Walt Dotrey said the man, holding a handkerchief over his face and armed with an automatic pistol, crawled into his office so other store employees would not see him. He said the bandit waited for a while and then forced him to walk to the front of the store where the safe is located and held four other persons at bay while he systematically looted the safe. Thompson of Anaheim to provide three 22,000-pound truck chassis at a price of $3,778.11 each. THE VEHICLES will be used by the Power and Light and Water departments. THE CITY awarded a $6,982 contract to Clark Elliott, one of seven bidders on the project, for an electrical vault in City park.
