Columnist Discusses Position Of Republican Party in California And Its Treatment of Gov. Knight
For a long spell, George Todt has been writing his daily column, "George Todt's Opinion" in the San Fernando Valley Times. In the years elapsing his column has gained in authoritativeness and accuracy, as well as lucidity, and the Anaheim Gazette is pleased to reprint the following column in which he discusses fairly and sensibly the position of the Republican Party in California, and especially as it relates to former Gov. Goodwin J. Knight, who, incidentally, observed his birthday anniversary this week:
Yesterday I told of attending a recent testimonial dinner for Assemblyman Charles Edward Chapel in Inglewood last week and seeing former Gov. and Mrs. Goodwin Knight there also.
Fair Weather Friends
They are truly a lovely, charming and devoted couple, and I consider them both to be the salt of the earth. They are really assets of immense proven worth to the Republican Party of California, although, for the moment, these particular assets seem to have been turned into frozen ones. Sad, but true.
Once the most sought-after couple for gala social occasions into the matter of blame regarding this unprofitable action, insofar as the Republican Party may be concerned, but in the interest of fairness, I think. It is only correct to point out that nobody in the State yelled against "Operation Switcheroo" so much as did then Gov. Knight at that time. And was right. It proved to be a tremendous political disaster for the GOP.
Let's face the facts as honestly as we can here. Goodie Knight was blameless in causing the calamitous switch to be made—and I think it's time to invite him to come back to the social swim now. The Republicans can't afford to continue senseless feuds of this type if they mean to have their house in order for the difficult 1960 campaign.
I'm not suggesting that the GOP should invite Goodie Knight to take over the reins of control in the party, but the leaders at this time ought to look at it something like this:
Outstanding Governor
After all, former Gov. Knight was a very outstanding governor—in the minds of many people, the best one California has ever owned.

Fair Weather Friends
They are truly a lovely, charming and devoted couple, and I consider them both to be the salt of the earth. They are really assets of immense proven worth to the Republican Party of California, although, for the moment, these particular assets seem to have been turned into frozen ones. Sad, but true.
Once the most sought-after couple for gala social occasions in which the Elephant predominated, the Knights have been pretty much cold-shouldered out of the picture since the last general election a year ago in the Golden State.
The fair-weather friends have seemingly flown the coop and most of their "political" friends appear to have melted away like the proverbial Arab into the night.
Shabby Treatment
The party brass seems studiously to ignore inviting the Knights to even the smallest social gatherings where politics happens to be the keynote for the occasion. I think it's a big mistake.
Now I give you my word that Goodie Knight has made no mention of this to me at any time in the past, nor did his beautiful Virginia. They are both too proud to complain at the shabby treatment they have been receiving and, to my best knowledge, have never mentioned this to anybody that I know about.
But it isn't necessary to be told about this matter; it's only too obvious—to anybody who takes a look for himself.
'Switcheroo' Was Fatal
I suppose there are some who blame Goodie for a share of the Republican catastrophe at the polls last year, but certainly it was not be who dreamed up "Operation Switcheroo" that cost the GOP its collective shirt when the votes were counted.
Except for ye old switcheroo, I am confident that the cast of political characters in Sacramento would largely be the same today as it was two years ago—and Knight would continue to be Governor. Bill Knowland the senior Senator and the present Governor Pat Brown would still be the popular Attorney General that he
I'm not suggesting that the GOP should invite Goodie Knight to take over the reins of control in the party, but the leaders at this time ought to look at it something like this:
Outstanding Governor
After all, former Gov. Knight was a very outstanding governor—in the minds of many people, the best one California has ever had. He gave this state a clean and efficient administration for more than six years, from 1952 until 1959.
He is an honest, upright and certainly a patriotic American of whom we can all afford to be proud. He and his wife are entitled to the greatest respect because, to a very large extent, he is the 'elder statesman' of his party here. Let's make continued use of his extensive experience and many recognized talents in the political field.
I met Goodwin Knight many years ago—before he became governor—when we participated together on a radio program called "Open Forum" at station KMPC in Hollywood. I took an immediate liking to him because of his strong, manly qualities and native intelligence.
Respect Is Due Him
In the years since then I have never asked him for the smallest favor and have sometimes opposed him vigorously on certain political questions, to be sure. But our friendship has withstood such crises in the past, and it made no difference whatsoever to me whether he was governor or not—I consistently like him just the same.
It seems to me that now is the time for all good Republicans to come to the aid of their party by showing the former governor the respect and correct good manners presently which are his rightful due.
Frankly, there is only one place where all "fair weather friends" should go. As you can guess, I hate to mention a world like that in this column. Wouldn't you?

Brown Feared Knight
We must recall that Gov. Brown showed little intent to run for the State's highest office before the switcheroo came into being. Another straw in that direction lies in the fact that, even after the well-liked attorney general did commit himself, there were few members of his party of any considerable stature who could be found to accompany him on what was then deemed to be a perilous journey down the political rapids.
Even Pat Brown apparently thought so, too. One has but to recall his sense of personal outrage when he found that Knowland and Knight were not going to fight it out between themselves for the governorship, but had switcherooed as candidates for each other's jobs.
The present governor cried out that it was "dirty politics" as far as he was concerned—and it was a safe bet at the time that he would never have left the impregnable position he held then as attorney-general if he had not thought Knowland and Knight would be slugging it out together for the governorship—which was bound to assist candidate Brown!

Philatelics Meet
The regular monthly meeting of the Orange County Philatellic Society was held Friday. This meeting featured an interesting program including a stamp and cover auction. The stamp club meets the first Friday of each month in the Committee Room located in the southeast part of the one-story Community Center Clubhouse, 1104 West 8th St., Santa Ana.
