Legion Hosts Tournament for San Clemente This year's sixth renewal of the annual American Legion Golf Tournament is to be the biggest ever, according to officers of San Clemente Port 423 of the Legion. The tournament, to be held on the San Clemente Municipal Links Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 25, 26 and 27, is attracting entries from all over Southern California. It is cosponsored by the merchants of San Clemente, who have gone all out in offering a large number of attractive prizes in addition to the trophies and prizes set up by the Legion itself. One thing he anticipates recommending that in each case of corporal punishment that it be administered in the presence of another witness. This is to protect the teacher or principal. Shanks pointed out he also will probably ask the board to continue the present understanding that spankings cannot be administered unless the matter is first discussed with parents. HESITATE "I hesitate in using this form of punishment unless it is absolutely necessary," he declared. The superintendent pointed out that the school district also has at its disposal a state law which can cause suspension or as a last resort expulsion of a child if he becomes a serious disciplinary problem. He says spankings should be dealt out "when common sense merits their use."
