100,000 Population for Anaheim Reasons for Orange County's great growth and an anticipated 100,000 population for Anaheim by next April were listed at the recent Orange County Economic Conference. The survey listed eight major reasons for the tremendous growth: Location next to Los Angeles County, with its "suburbanization". Vacant space to accommodate growth. A part of, and possessing ready access to, the nation's third largest manufacturing and retail center. Santa Ana Freeway and other thoroughfares. Fine climate and living environment. Excellent recreational and entertainment facilities. Less congestion, lower land prices and less smog than areas closer to the core of the metropolitan area. Acquisition of an impressive list of companies and a tremendous pool of skilled workers in electronics, avionics and related fields. OTHER FACTORS Other important economic factors contributing to the growth have been: BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION: Building permit volume in Orange County has been in a sharply rising trend during the past two years. In the first six months to 1959, the total valuation was at a rate equivalent to nearly $400 million a year. Home building reached an all-time high in Orange County in 1955, when permits were issued for 28,011 family dwelling units — most of them tract homes. After the building of tract homes was overdone in 1955, many builders turned to construction of multiple dwellings. During the first half of 1959, units in multiples were authorized at a rate equivalent to 10,500 a year. Nearly 40 per cent of the dwelling units being built in Orange County this year are in apartments and other multiple family structures. The boom in apartment construction has been overdone in fact that 1958 was a "recession year," total retail sales in Orange County increased by nearly 10 per cent as compared with 1957, the previous record year. The bank stated that here is good reason to believe total retail sales in Orange County during 1959 will materially exceed the $800 million mark. AGRICULTURE: It still bulks large in the economy of Orange County. However, urbanization is proceeding steadily and inexorably, the bank warned. Orange groves are falling before the buildup dozer and factories and housing tracts are taking shape on former bean fields. During the past seven years, nearly 3,700 acres per year have gone into recorder subdivisions. MANUFACTURING: Now the leading source of basic income in Orange County. Employment and payroll in manufacturing have shown impressive gains in Southern California since the pre-Korea period, but no area has been as spectacular as Orange County. Security said. Between 1949 and 1957, manufacturing employment in the county increased from 6,707 to 30,451, or 354 per cent. No other county showed gain as large as 200 per cent, and the 14 counties in the southern half of the stated registered increase of 106 per cent for the area. Registration for Local Residents Fullerton - Junior College Evening Chorale began its fifth session on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. in room 37 on the high school campus, according to Kenneth Helvey, choir director. Enrollment for the chorales was held in the classroom on that night, with rehearsals starting the same evening. The JC Chorale is made up of adult singers from North Orange County who are interested in performing unusual church works. In the past the group has performed the "Elijah," "St. Paul's Oratorio" by Mendell-sohn, and Braham's "Requiem," in addition to its annual presentation of "The Messiah." The chorale plans three of four concerts for the season, including the "Messiah" and "Elijah." All interested singers are urged to attend and sign up at the first meeting or call Helvey at LA 5-2331. Attorney Daniel L. Stack, of the Chamber of Commerce Board, is contributing his services in the preparation of incorporation papers. The organization of the Orange County State College Foundation is another step in the development of a full state college program for this area. Such a foundation in each of the other state colleges serves many college needs which cannot be headily channelled through official state departments and functions in areas which cannot be readily channelled through official state departments and function in areas which cannot be financed through public funds. The major areas of service are the handling of scholarship funds, given to aid worthy students, as the intermediary for research grants made by private or public agencies, and as the holding corporation for various other gifts and grants to the college. Local Residents Help Form New Guild for Authors Here The newly created Fullerton Junior College Guild for Authors, an organization devoted to encouraging its members in the arts of creative writing, is now inviting membership. The group of fledgling writers, most present or past enrollees of college creative writing classes, will begin meeting regularly this fall at the college. ORGANIZATION The organization was formed in late June at the home of the group's adviser, Monte Hart, who instructs the FJC evening Creative Writing group. Named as general chairman of the writers club was Stan Pryon of La Habra. Other officers are vice-chairman, Paul Sanford of Anaheim, and secretary-treasurer, Betty Lassley of Yorba Linda. Other charter members of the group are Howard D. Davis of Anaheim, Maxine Dunham of Placentia, Eve Forestone of Anaheim, Iva C. Halm of Brea, Henrietta Hanson of Fullerton, Gil Harwell of Fullerton, Ida M. Lackey of Fullerton, Joyce Pruitt of Whittier, Dee Richards of Yorba Linda, Ruth Rockwood of Anaheim, Anne Salat of La Habra, and Frank Zimmerly of Whittier. MEMBERSHIP Membership in the guild will be accepted on the basis of written material submitted to a membership committee. Either manuscripts or published works will be acceptable. No person under 18 years will be admitted without special consideration. Orange College Students to Get New Student Book Instead of the usual activity card, Orange Coast College student body members will receive an activity book this year. The book is given to all students in change for their student book fee of $15 for the year or $80 for the semester. It entitles them to free admission to approximately $70 worth of sports and social activities as a copy of the college annual. Each page of the book is printed with information of a different event. As the student attends a event, he tears out the prologue and uses it as an admission ticket. Previously students received card printed with numbers; different number was punched out of the card for admission each event. Married students may buy associated student activity books for their husbands or wives for $4.50.
