Local Cancer Fund Dollars Aid Research
Orange County cancer donation dollars are being used in the county to fight cancer with research at Orange County General Hospital.
Dr. Paul H. Guth, the hospital's Director of Gastro-enterology (meaning the speciality of stomach and intestinal diseases) is devoting his spare hours, with the help of American Cancer Society grants, to the study of certain enzyme changes in the blood of cancer patients.
The three enzymes studied with the help of his first $3,000 grant from the California Division of the American Cancer Society; were two enzymes formed by the pancreas: amylase (which digests starches) and lipase (which digests fats); and esterase, an enzyme formed by the liver.
RESEARCH
Dr. Guth's research goal (using newly developed enzyme techniques which have the advantage of being simpler and more rapidly performed than the standard enzyme methods) was to find if, when the pancreas is cancerous, there is any significant change in the concentration of the enzymes of amylase and lipase in the blood.
The report, he will present in September at the American College of Gastro-enterology meeting in Los Angeles, shows that he found no significant alteration due to cancer. However, it does show that in pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) that both enzymes are markedly elevated, hence giving the study diagnostic value with regard to this disease.
The liver enzyme, esterase, was found to decrease in concentration in the blood in such diseases as cirrhosis of the liver and in early hepatitis. But in cancer of the liver it was found that there was no significant change in the concentration.
Dr. Guth's second grant of $500 from the American Cancer Society's national offices this fall will give him a chance to further study these enzymes with a garden to cancer of the pancreas gall bladder, and liver. It will so enable him to begin research involving another enzyme, leucanopeptidase, which upon study may be found to have value differentiating diseases including cancer of the pancreas, liver and gall bladder.
BEGAN CAREER
Dr. Guth's dedicated medical career began in the east where he received his pre-medical training at New York University, and graduated from the Howard University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C., with his medical degree at the age of 22.

On September 29 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Knoch 14413 East Mansa Drive, La Mirada, a group will meet to discuss "American Foreign Policy."
On October 1 sections organized to study "Great Issues in Education" will meet at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Greening at 1933 Skycrest Drive, Fullerton and Mr. and Mrs. Duane Baker. 526 North Greenleaf Avenue will discuss "American Foreign Policy." Nueva Whittier. To study an "Introduction to the Humanities" in La Mirada, interested persons may enroll for a course to be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward McGrath, 14714 San Ardo Drive.
ANAHEIM HOMES
Two homes will offer classrooms for the study of "Values in Conflict: The American Century in Theory and Practice; that of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Reid 2702 Yale Avenue, Anaheim on September 29 and Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Smith on October 1.
Homes of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Gardner 9222 Trask Avenue, Garden Grove and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wilcox, 1316 Christine Drive, Whittier, on September 30 will welcome discussion groups on "Ways of Mankind."
Persons interested in enrolling for any of these courses, or those in nearby communities may obtain a Liberal Arts Discussion Group brochure from UCLA (of offices of University Extension Bradshaw 2-6161, Station 721) and follow enrollment directions for participation in the 10 weekly sessions of study.
LIBERAL ARTS
Liberal Arts Discussion groups were first organized by University Extension in 1955 and immediately proved popular, for during the initial year of the program 253 persons participated in 15 discussion groups in 12 Southern California communities. Subsequent interest in them spread, somewhat in the manner of the early Chicago Great Books movement, until this fall well over 100 groups, with more than 2500 participants will be in progress.
Participants in this program do not need a college background. There are no speakers. Sessions are limited to 25, and are strictly for discussion, led by a trained member of the group, or, in the case of numerous more advanced lecture-discussion groups, a qualified academic lecturer.
Fee for group membership, which includes one complete set of study materials, is $14 for an individual or $20 for a married couple.
