Little Notes (Continued from Page 1) standard of living and well-paid, top-caliber executives. But when men, who only supervise the education of many thousands of youngsters, such as Elementary District Supt. Robert Shanks and High School District Supt. Paul Cook, then they are overpaid according to some. Both these men not only are in charge of the educational setup of their districts, but are responsible for administrating the spending of millions of dollars each year. It's your money they are spending. And if the public feels they want second-rate administrators running their districts, then that is what they will get if they start tampering with salaries. Cook is drawing a salary here of $18,500 a year. Shanks is being paid $15,800 annually. Cook's district includes two senior high schools and five junior high schools. Shanks is in charge of operating 17 elementary schools. Both these men are responsible for trustees, most of whom are top-tight businessmen and executives themselves. These trustees are responsible for setting the salaries of superintendents. Publisher (Continued from Page 1) directors accompanied the Governor and Mrs. Brown from the main gate to the stage erected before the Counties Building where each director was introduced by the governor and his formal announcement of the opening was declared. On Saturday, Abraham, who is chairman of the Press-Radio-Television committee of the Board of Directors of the State Fair, will preside at th annual banquet honoring the newspaper publishers and radio-TV executives of the state. It is expected that over 1000 executives and their wives will attend. The address of welcome will be delivered by Gov. Brown. School TV (Continued from Page 1) countries and discussing their background, two cameras keep her in focus. Across the room sit the two operators at their control panel—always watching the monitor and making sure Mrs Smith keeps in focus. Supt. Shanks explains that the local district is probably the first in the nation to use remote cameras for ETV. He explains that they originally were designed for Hallamore of Anaheim for industrial use. "But they fit in perfectly here," the superintendent says. Cook's district includes two senior high schools and five junior high schools. Shanks is in charge of operating 17 elementary schools. Both these men are responsible to trustees, most of whom are top-flight businessmen and executives themselves. These trustees are responsible for setting the salaries of superintendents. If the boards, familiar with business and private industry, could get away with paying these men less, they probably would. But they know in order to keep men like Shanks and Cook on the job they must pay a good salary to keep them from putting their talents to use elsewhere for higher pay. Coffee Houses (Continued from Page A-1) courageaging coffee houses from locating here. The question of the regulatory ordinance came up at Tuesday night's City Council session. It was rapidly brushed aside when City Manager Keith Murdock explained that the new regulations are not yet complete. GET ATTENTION Coffee houses and the beat generation in past several weeks have made big headlines in Los Angeles County. One such beat generation place in Venice was being considered by the Los Angeles Police Commission. Entertainment was the issue in this case. The beatniks and non-beatniks squared off in hearings to decide whether the hangout will be granted an entertainment license. At one of the hearings Mrs. Edgar Heshford, president of the Women's Civic Club of Venice, testified she visited the Gas House when (the place under discussion) opened July 4. "They (the beats) were standing around smoking, drinking coffee and looking nonchalant." Beat author Lawrence Upton snapped back, "the lady is quite right, of course. It's sinful to be nonchalant. We shall endeavor to be more nonchalant in the future." testified she visited the Gas House when (the place under discussion) opened July 4. At least $56,000 of this is in federal aid and money received from the Ford Foundation. Shanks is quick to point out that in future years the cost of the program will only be salaries and operational expense. He says the present facilities now being erected will take care of future needs. The Supt. feels more savings to the district will be realized by the television by having smaller groups for instruction in the basics. Shanks laughingly explains he'll have a television moniter in his office. "After all," he quipped, "I'll not want to miss the real thing." (Continued from Page 1) ... Education be handled through the physical education classes. At present girls are the only ones in the district receiving sex education instruction in physical education. It was suggested that 10th grade boy's classes be given a two week's course using the pamphlet, "Understanding Sex," as reference material. Cook said he did not know whether details for the boy's sex education program can be worked out this semester. Market Basket Picnic? Barbecue? Beach?
