Three major events are expected to populate the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa with horses, Indians and wild animals during September. Stewart W. Yost, secretary-manager of the 32nd District Agricultural Association Orange County Fair board of directors), today announced the events set for the fair grounds during the coming month. The Mesa Boots and Saddle Club takes over the Horse Arena Sunday, Sept. 13, for a day-long benefit horse show. Next event on the calendar is a benefit circus sponsored by the Costa Mesa Optimists Club. The club plans to import the entire Rudy Bros. Circus which features animal acts, clowns, high wire artists and all the usual hoopla of the "Big Top." STAGED OUTDOOR The show, however, will be staged in the Horse Arena. "'It's too big to put it into a tent," claims Jack Keck, advance agent for the show. Top attraction is an act featuring trained polar bears, claimed as the only one of its kind in the world. The show is set for two performances—4 p.m. and 8 p.m.—on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Tickets are available at $1.25 for adults and 65 cents for children from all Optimists Cub members and will be available at the gate. Proceeds will go to the Harbor Area Girls Club and other youth activities sponsored by the Optimists. Final event on the September fairgrounds schedule is a two-day pow-wow of Boy Scouts, YMCA groups and others interested in Indian lore. Billed as a "Witiyapi" (Ogalalla-Sioux word for "get-together") the program is set for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 26 and 27. Handicraft, bead and feather work will be on display from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Competition in Indian dances is set for Saturday evening. More dancing, Indian-style, is set for Sunday, following non-nominational church services for the young people attending the program. 250 PARTICIPANTS More than 250 participants from throughout California and other parts of the West are expected to attend this fifth annual Witiyapi, second consecutive one staged at the Orange County Fairgrounds. The entire program is open to the public and general admission is 50 cents per person. Funds are to be used to defray costs of producing the educational program. Both real Indians (there will be a few of them) and the make-believe ones from throughout the West are expected to throw up tepees in the area surrounding the Agricultural Exhibits Bldg at the fairgrounds for the duration of the Witiyapi. The Orange County Fairgrounds are located at 20391 Newport Blvd., Costa Mesa between Santa Ana and Newport Beach. Associated Chambers to Sponsor New Exposition One of the most unusual shows ever to be presented at the Orange County Fairgrounds is shaping up today. The show, the first annual Orange County Industrial Exposition, is sponsored by the newly reorganized Associated Chambers of Commerce. It has headquarters in Anaheim. It will showcase the county's highly diversified industries and their products. Dates for the show have been set for Oct. 14 through 18 and the production staff already is in the field contacting industries, firms which provide tools and services in industry and local chambers of commerce who also may participate in the colorful event. Sort of a "county fair" for industry, the show will present displays, demonstrations and product exhibits designed to show the general public at a glance the wide variety of products being designed and produced in the county. "The show will demonstrate to industries in and out of the county that our community not only is rapidly becoming a world center for electronics research and production, but that we also have just about every kind of industry imaginable," said Harry I. Horn, chairman of the show. Producing the show for the Associated Chambers is George Colouris, who for the past five years has successfully produced the Orange County Home Show, Horn said. Headquarters for the industrial exposition have been established at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Sea Scouts Seek New Recruits Anaheim boys between the ages of 14 and 16 with an urge to "go to sea" might find the answer with the Sea Explorer Scouts of Anaheim. New members are being recruited now and those interested are asked to contact Norm Cave, scoutmaster, LA 8-7826, for more information. A meeting was held Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. at the La Palma Youth Center, 317 E. La Palma, and all boys in this age bracket are welcome to attend and hear all about it. The Sea Explorer Scouts are a branch of the Explorer Boy Scoutig with interests centered on navigation and boating. Occasional trips are taken in the group's 45-foot diesel motor launch.
