Therapy
This program, so vital to the welfare of polio victims, is dependent chiefly upon the emergency March of Dimes that has been set for Aug. 10 to 23; according to John McKitrick, Chairman of Orange County Chapter of the National Foundation.
Physical Therapy
The physical therapist, McKitrick pointed out, is an extremely important figure in post-polio care. In the case of a new patient, the physical therapist inspects the needs for equipment and care, which she then provides, giving each service under supervision of physician and through the foundation.
The home-check service, McKitrick added, likewise is an important function of the physiological therapist, who makes periodic visits to the patient's home to be sure the patient's condition has not retrogressed. The trained therapist can spot the beginning of any problem and bring it to the attention of the doctor immediately.
The Orange County Chapter physical therapy program is as old as the Chapter which sponsors it, having been established by Miss Idabel Durgan of Orange, then connected with the County Health Department. She also was first Executive Secretary of the Chapter, Mrs. Helen Halber of Placentia, was the first physical therapist to serve the Chapter.
Started
The therapy program was started by the Chapter in cooperation with the Orange County Health Department to meet the special problems of the great numbers of polio patients in Orange County. Because of National Foundation policy, the Chapter no longer pays the salaries of the physical therapists directly.
