August 10 to 23, following the example of other sections of the country, in order to meet its obligations to between 400 and 500 polio victims in the county during the remainder of the year. This announcement was made by officials of Orange County Chapter of the National Foundation, meeting with local community chairmen of the 1959 Marion of Dimes at the Reverend house Santa Ana. The chapter is facing a critical financial situation, since it is longer able to obtain outside funds from the National Foundation epidemic fund, the group was told by John McKittrick, Tustin, chairman of Orange County Chapte. Chapters in areas of the country are having fewer polio patients have been feeding the national epidemic fund for the benefit areas of higher polio incidence such as Orange County. But I wonder if you've thought about this fact: when something does go wrong with your phone—because of accidents or normal wear and tear—your telephone man will be out to fix it, free of charge. It's a lifetime guarantee, too, in effect as long as you have a phone. And, when you come right down to it, it makes your telephone pretty unusual. Can you think of anything else that doesn't cost you a single cent for repairs? CONVERTED LUMBER CARRIER is speeding up the installation of Coaxial Cable for the Anaheim Elementary School District Closed Circuit Television. Employees left to right are Harold McClaim, Leonard Garry, Herm McCulley, and foreman, Tom Frank. They are part of the team responsible for the installation. This phase of the installation took place on Sycamore street just north of the city park. Orange County Emergency Campaign County Cancer Crusade Helps Orange Countians donating to the successful 1959 Cancer Crusade should be interested to know that their dollars have helped make possible the largest medical statistical study ever attempted in America, Howard Loudon, Orange County Cancer Society president, said today. The research, to begin this fall, will be instigated to find out why some people are more likely to get cancer than others. This and other questions will be answered in an American Cancer Society study involving more than 1,000,000 Americans. The project, which will take six years to complete, will be conducted with the assistance of 50,000 trained American Cancer Society volunteers, Loudon added. He pointed out that if volunteers were not available to handle the field work, the project would cost many millions of dollars. The study, under the direction of Dr. E. Coyler Hammond, American Cancer Society Director of Statistical Research, also will probe the effect of environment on cancer and will attempt to learn more about its symptoms to improve early detection. Dr. Hammnd said that the information to be obtained is designed to test many theories about the cause of cancer. Atomic radiation helps this man do his job. He's Dr. Hugh Macpherson, one of Standard research engineers. The "hot" ring he's holding is an ordinary piston ring which has been exposed to atomic radiation. By installing such radioactive piston rings in car, our research engineers can use a Geiger counter to measure wear as it happens while the car is driven on the highway, in traffic, on hills—in even possible driving situation. This research technique has taken months of the time needed to test the effectiveness of new motor oils, and it's far more accurate than previous methods. Our progress has been steady. Working with car manufacturers, we've virtually ended the problem of wear in automobile engines. In the 1930's, for example, cars could go only 20 to 40 thousand miles before a major overhaul. But with today's motor oils and regular oil changes, your engine can be good for more than 100,000 miles — can, in fact, outlast the car.
