Anaheim Company Develops New System
Vastly improved radio contact with spacecraft, missiles, satellites and aircraft may soon be possible through use of a new communication system developed by scientist of the Aeronautical and Instrument Division of Robertshaw-Fulton Controls Company, Anaheim.
The communication system, called Phase Multilock, was described by Maynard D. McFarlane and Cecil A. Crafts in a paper delivered at the Institute of Radio Engineers Military Electronics Show at the Sheraton-Park Hotel, Washington, D.C.
Transmission
In transmission of binary (two-part) information over a noisy radio circuit, the receiver is faced with the problem of deciding between only two possible conditions as the signal sent from the transmitter, the authors explain.
Greatest efficiency under these conditions is secured with a coherent system in which a reference wave, which may be compared to the incoming signal, is available at the receiver.
This allows the receiver to determine which of two phase conditions is being transmitted.
In the Robertshaw-Fulton Phase Multilock System, this reference signal is derived from the incoming signal by means of a novel multiplier-divider circuit which removes any phase shift from the incoming signal. This provides a phase coherent reference signal to which the transmitted signal can be compared.
Authors Report
The authors report that Phase Multilock has been tested and proved to provide results very close to the theoretical optimum for this type of transmission over a nosily channel, meaning reliable transmission can be secured over greater distances than similar systems.
Usefulness also extends to long distance point - to - point radio communication where noise cause appreciable interference. Phase Multilock is directly applicable to transmission of computer data, teletype and five unit signals, digital information, facsimile, and to the remote control of servomechanisms and other devices.
Another advantage of the Phase Multilock System is that it allows use of a narrow radio band, thereby contributing to the urgent need for more efficient utilization of the radio spectrum.
Equipment required for the transmitting station in the Phase Multilock System is extremely simple, the authors point out. Transmitting and receiving units in the prototype systems have been designed for installation in standard rack equipment and a
