'Do it Yourself Kits' Used by Local School An enterprising outfit in the east, known as "Science Research Associates," has gone a step farther than most commercial manufacturers with "Do It Yourself kits." Reaching into the very heart of learning — the school classroom — they have come up with a reading kit to improve regular classroom reading programs. There are 150 different assignments on 10 different levels ranging as high as tenth grade. Doing a little practical research on the researchers, a reporter visited a fifth grade class in Centralia School district. Briefed previously by George C. Williams, assistant superintendent in charge of education, the method similar to the one the Air Force developed during the war was already familiar—the "SQR method," or survey, question, read. Later on, the teacher adds a second "R"—review. Graded Materials Graded materials in the kits include self-scoring answer cards. Children keep track of all their own grades in a booklet from day to day, and even graph their own progress. The results are, almost without exception, almost unbelievable, according to Williams. Thinking to breeze through the routine—after all, this was only the fifth grade—the intrepid reporter stepped up, chose a folder titled "Guided Missile in Feathers" and began to follow printed instructions, the same as a fifth grade pupil is expected to do. First, a quick survey of the materials—all about the peregrine, world's fastest bird, and the lost art of falconry. Settling down to study the content, the reporter read the lesson which drew comparison between the swift, ancient bird and aircraft and mechanisms of defense in this modern jet age. After finishing the test, the reporter reluctantly returned the kit for the answer card. Grades must be above 90 per cent until three are passed in succession. The reeporter gained a new respect for fifth graders when he found he had "goofed" them half of the examination. Teachers using the science have found it not only impaired ability to read, but improved prebension in other subjects well. The listening portion of program, when the teacher aloud to pupils, has aided overall ability to pay attention class and to increase reason skill. Several class members vested opinions when asked to the "S.R.A." skit has meant them. Typical answers from men and girls were "gained bigger cabalery;" "grades" in some studies have come up since being for comprehension"; "learning to skim" for important graphs"; "learned to analyze to reason, which helps find facts in arithmetic problem; "helped speed up reading and understand better"; helped to preciate books and enjoy reading more than ever before." Among the success stories they relate are the ones where a pupil who was scheduled for summer school was taken off the list because of his marked improvement in reading and the boy who advanced an equivalent of two years in a three and a half month period of time, according to the actual results of the tests on his record. A new boy in one class was surprised to find that he was no longer a "lip reader" and could read faster and remember longer than before. One of the greatest assets to the reading program is that the wide variety of material in the kits has helped interest children in specific subjects which have led to new and exciting hobbies and a desire to read more. The wide range of material covered in the kits is a challenge, too. As one little girl remarked, "I like the lessons in the kit. Some of them are more interesting than books from the library." Chairman Pro Tem Election (Continued from Page 1) point up the extreme necessity for such a program or a substantial portion of it at a very early date." In another part of Murdoch's budget message he indicates he has allocated funds for "an election covering the urgent portion of the capital improvement program recommended by the various citizen's committees, but which at this time has not been finalized." The citizen's groups have recommended the city is in need of approximately $32 million in capital improvement program recommended by the various citizen's committees, but which at this time has not been finalized." Murdoch said capital improvements contained in the new budget are 7 per cent less than last year. Most critical, according to Murdoch, is that very little funds are available for park development, nothing for fire stations, nor for any other purpose which would enable the city to make a slight gain on progress. "In order to maintain a sound operational program which keeps pace with demands of growth and without adding new services, it is essential that revenue sources are not depleted," he declared. Murdoch stated that such a depletion has been occurring at alarm rate.
