Ball Rd., Anaheim, Marine Acting Cpl. Buddie E. Tacklitt, son of Floyd Tacklitt of 1211 S. Harbor, Anaheim, and Marine Pfc. George G. Smith, son of Mrs. C. McDonald of 2130 Westport Ave., Anaheim, took part in Operation "Twin Peaks" on California's southern coast from May 17 to June 2, with Marines from the First Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Air and ground forces were launched against aggressor forces involving the newly-redesigned helicopter assault carrier USS Princeton from which attacking troops launched assaults at inland targets, in the latest employment of the Corps' vertical envelopment doctrine. The two-week maneuver was the most extensive air-ground landing exercise to be conducted on the Southern California Coast since 1957. STANFORD, Calif. — Midshipman Richard S. Gregory son of Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Gregory prised both "friendly" and "aggressor" forces. They employed conventional and simulated atomic weapons in carrying out their part in the amphibious assault exercise. WESTERN PACIFIC — Arthur R. Hagen, fire controlman third class, USN, son of Mr. and Arthur E. Hagen of 722 West Place, Anaheim, is serving aboard the destroyer USS George Mackenzie operating with the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific. A destroyer acts as a screen ship to protect larger vessels. STANFORD, Calif. — Midshipman Richard S. Gregory son of Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Gregory of 2262 Santa Ana Canyon Rr., Anaheim, received the Palo Alto Chapter. Daughters of the American Revolution Award May 5 at the Stanford University Navy Reserve Officers' Training Corps' 1959 Annual Final Review and Presentation of Awards Ceremony. The award was presented to Midshipman Gregory for excellence in Naval Weapons. He expects to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Science in June of 1962. CAMP PENDLETON — Bouce E. Duncan, seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Louing of 9532 Colchester St., Anaheim, serving aboard the attack cargo ship USS Skagit, took part in an amphibious landing on the beaches of Camp Pendleton, Calif., May 28. The operation, known as "Twin Peaks", involved more than 60 Navy ships and 25,000 Marines and was the largest exercise of its type since January 1957. Carter Funeral services for Earl K. Carter, 66, and Anaheim resident for nine years, were held Thursday in Hilgenfeld Mortuary Chapel. Carter, who resided at 312½ N. Lemon St. for nine years, died June 8 in Orange County Hospital after a long illness. He is survived by his widow, Eva; daughter, Mrs. Betty Belle Parker of Saa Pedro; sons, Bill Carter serving with the U.S. Navy and Fred Carter of Huntington Carter, 66, and Anaheim resident for nine years, were held Thursday in Hilgenfeld Mortuary Chapel. Carter, who resided at 312½ N. Lemon St. for nine years, died June 8 in Orange County Hospital after a long illness. Manuel Casillas Requiem mass for Manuel Casillas, 1135 Parry St. was held Tuesday at St. Boniface Church with interment in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery. Casillas, 65, has been a resident of Anaheim for 25 years and was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church. He is survived by sisters, Felipa Rios and Trini Lemus of Anaheim. FORT BRAGG, S. C. — Army Specialist Flye Marvin J. Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. George T. Wilson, 803 S. Gilbert, Anaheim, recently was assigned to the 523d Military Intelligence Company at Fort Bragg. Specialist Wilson, an interpreter in the company, entered the Army in May 1955 and was last stationed in Germany. The '25-year-old soldier attended John Muir Junior College, Pasadena. Murtaugh of 1425 Grida PL, Anaheim, serving as the destroyer U. S. S. WilKeith, is participating in "Opportunity Inland Seas", a cruise of 28 United States warships to cities in the Great Lakes this summer. The Navy fleet, which includes destroyers, a heavy cruiser and an amphibious force of seven ships, will visit 27 cities in the seven states bordering the Great Lakes. The ships will enter the Great Lakes on June 25 and deturn to the Atlantic Fleet in late July. This is the first time a major fleet has been ontheGreat Lakes since the War of 1812.
