Automobile Group Is Charged With A "Token" Effort The Southern California Regional Air Pollution Coordinating Council heard the automobile industry assaulted last night by Los Angeles County Supervisor Warren M. Dorn for "a pitiful inadequate and token effort to control motor vehicle exhausts." Dorn told the Council that recent conferences with industry representatives revealed that the entire automobile industry is spending only about one million dollars per year for exhaust control research. "This can hardly be termed a crash program," added Dorn as he compared this expenditure with the one million dollars spent last year by the Southern California Edison Company alone to develop answers to air pollution problems associated with the operation of steam power plants. Maximum Progress Needed "Because of the kind of effort being made by Detroit, the auto exhaust problem is far from being solved," Dorn stated. He added that this points up the necessity for maximum progress to control other sources of pollution. The Council also heard a warning that concentrations of sulphurous contaminants in the air above southern California "might produce an air pollution disaster similar to those which have occurred in London and Donora, Pennsylvania." The warning was voiced by Dr. 6. Anaheim Gazette Anahlm, Calif., Thurs., Nov. 6, 1958 Irritation, Johnstone nevertheless urged its enactment as a measure to protect the public from possible health hazards. A Tribute To Eisenhower On motion of Supervisor Paul Anderson of Riverside County, Council members voted a tribute to President Eisenhower for his leadership in a national attack on air pollution conditions. The Council resolution pointed its action in arranging for a National Conference on Air Pollution to be held in Washington in November, and its support for a strong federal air pollution research program. A scroll will be presented to the President in Washington, D.C. during the National Conference by delegates from the Southern California Regional Air Pollution Coordinating Council. Among those attending the meeting were Orange County Supervisor William J. Phillips and Orange County Acting Air Pollution Control Officer William Fitchen. H. F. Johnstone, chairman of the University of Illinois Chemical Engineering Department, and consultant to the Los Angeles County Air Pollution Control District. Acid Mist Forms Dr. Johnstone stated that more than eighty hours of fog were experienced in Los Angeles County alone in one recent year and that version of air borne sulphurous such fogs permit the conversion of air borne sulphurous contaminants into such toxic products as sulphuric acid mist. He stated that within two to five fog in the presence of sulphurous minutes after the formation of pollutants, sulphuric acid mist can be formed. "I cannot say that a public health disaster will occur, but only that it might unless continued attention is directed to control of this type of pollution," Johnstone added. Here to testify at a public hearing before the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Dr. Johnstone is supporting an Air Pollution Control District recommendation for a rule regulating the burning of sulphur bearing fuel oil in Los Angeles County. Separating sulphurous contaminants from the general problem of eye irritating smog, Johnstone stated that sulphur dioxide contributes to reduced visibility in Los Angeles County that constitutes an ever present health hazard. What makes a Medallion Home your BEST new-home buy (and your safest investment for the future) MEDALLION HOME LIVE BETTER ELECTRICALLY 3. Lighting for Beauty and Eye Comfort Every Medallion Home must provide lighting which is "easy on the eyes" two ways: It must permit you to use every room, hallway and entrance safely, comfortably and efficiently...and it must beautify those areas, too. Resale value of a Medallion Home is protected, because a Medallion Home will stay electrically up-to-date in the all-electric future. (By striking contrast, two out of three new houses being built are already electrically obsolete.) So look for extra-value homes which have earned the Medallion.
