The Home -- America's Top Asset
The American Home is our country's most precious asset. This is the expressed conviction of Warren Ferguson, one of Southern California's outstanding attorneys. Mr. Ferguson in a recent talk with friends and constituents stressed the importance of the individual sense of justice, tolerance and good will in a nation ruled by laws. Success of our great democracy, according to Mr. Ferguson, can only be assured by a continuing climate of fair-mindedness and equity. There is no better training ground for these learned virtues than the home—where give and take combine with understanding to create the finest harmony known to man.
Ferguson, Municipal Attorney for the cities of Buena Park, Santa Fe Springs, Placentia, La Puente and Baldwin Park, is currently campaigning for Judge of Anaheim-Fullerton Municipal Court.

FASHION TEST FOR PHONES—how we check new designs with you today so your phones will give more pleasure tomorrow
What would you like your telephones of tomorrow to look like? What shape?
What size? What design? These are questions phone man Arland Snarr, top picture, is asking Mrs. Helen Hoffman. She's helping us test new phone designs for beauty and convenience. Of course, you can't get these phones today. The bedroom phone, front in the top picture, and the other with the novel dial, are strictly test phones. Mrs. Hoffman kept each in her home for a month. Now she's giving her opinion of them. Her answers, plus those of hundreds of other style-testers, will guide us. They'll help us do a better job for you—help us design phones for your home that you'll like both for beauty and convenience.

$118,000,000.00...is the amount of taxes the State Board of Equalization reports you are saved every year by California's nonprofit schools built, paid for, maintained by Protestant, Catholic, Jewish and nonsectarian groups.
$400,000,000.00...is the sum that would be required—again by official report of the State Board of Equalization—to duplicate the school buildings built at no public expense by California's 1,076 nonprofit schools.
To tax them would shift a high percentage of their enrollment into critically over-crowded public schools—at the public's expense!
$346.00 PER PUPIL...is the average cost per year to the taxpayer to educate a child in the public school system, according to figures supplied by State Controller Robert C. Kirkwood.
The State Board of Equalization reports that if these schools were taxed, they would provide less than $1,800,000 in tax revenue. Don't punish schools that are giving the taxpayers the greatest bargain in history—a $118,000,000 tax saving in exchange for less than $1,800,000 in tax exemption. To punish these schools with a tax would punish every California taxpayer.

IT'S UN-AMERICAN...Proposition No. 16 singles out for taxation the nonprofit elementary and high schools sponsored and paid for by Protestant, Catholic and Jewish faiths. It is a PUNITIVE measure. It violates the American tradition of tax-free education. AND ITS PURPOSE IS DISCRIMINATION.
No state taxes nonprofit schools, for the simple reason that they save taxpayers millions of dollars every year in school support—$118,000,000 in California alone. Parents of children attending nonprofit schools pay the entire cost without one cent of state aid.
IT'S UNFAIR...It is unfair to force a family to pay a double tax for education. Parents of children in nonprofit schools pay their full share of public school taxes. To tax their nonprofit schools would be taxing them twice for education.
None of the other 48 states taxes these schools. Tax-free education is an American tradition originating in colonial times.
Nonprofit colleges and universities are not taxed. It is unfair and inconsistent to tax California's 390 Protestant, 643 Catholic and 43 Jewish and nonsectarian elementary and high schools.
