A Threat to Health
The serious threat to the health of the citizens of this area as a result of inadequate sewer facilities is something that must be corrected. The Orange County Health Department has warned that the situation must be corrected.
A special election on August 5 to authorize the bond issue to finance the construction of 88 miles of trunk sewer lines will correct the situation.
The health department reminded Sanitation officials of the serious epidemic in Santa Ana in 1924 when over 10,000 people were stricken, and 48 deaths resulted.
“This emergency health measure is of vital interest to every man, woman and child in this area,” commented Bob Boney, chairman of the citizens committee for sewers, “It is of utmost importance not just to the health of our citizens, but for the continued growth and economy of our area as well.”
California Needs Craftsmen
Governor Goodwin J. Knight proclaims July “Apprenticeship Month” in California. The proclamation recognizes the critical role craftsmen are playing in California’s tremendous population growth and industrial development.
Between 1940 and 1950 the number of craftsmen in the state increased by 82 per cent while the total work force only increased by 57 per cent, according to a recent study of California’s work force published by the University of California press.
Without building trades craftsmen, our tremendous housing boom would never have happened; without metal trade craftsmen, this state’s manufacturing industries would never have achieved the remarkable progress they have; without service trade craftsmen, in the automotive, printing and meatcutting industries, for example, our rapidly growing population could not have reached the standard of living it enjoys today.
Although it is generally recognized throughout industry that apprenticeship is the superior way to train qualified craftsmen many of our skilled workers were not afforded the opportunity to learn their trade in this manner in years gone by. Today a high level of skill, intelligence and education is demanded in the crafts and apprenticeship meets industry’s requirements by combining training on the job.
Larger Air Parcels
Postmaster Marshall N. Moore announced today that size weight limitations on air parcel to overseas military post offices were greatly liberalized effective July 1.
Air parcels have been limited to two pounds and a combine length and girth of 30 inches. Since July 1, such parcels most overseas military post offices may weigh up to 70 pounds and have combined length and girth up to 100 inches.

Although it is generally recognized throughout industry that apprenticeship is the superior way to train qualified craftsmen many of our skilled workers were not afforded the opportunity to learn their trade in this manner in years gone by. Today a high level of skill, intelligence and education is demanded in the crafts and apprenticeship meets industry's requirements by combining training on the job with related technical instruction in school.
In California apprenticeship is a voluntary program with standards set by industry itself. Consulting services and related instruction are provided by the State Division of Apprenticeship Standards and the local school system.
In promoting apprenticeship during July the Governor is expressing the feelings of a great number of industry people who are presently benefiting from apprentice training. However, it should be noted that even though California leads the nation with 19,000 registered apprentices, there is a great deal more to be done if we are going to be assured of an adequate supply of competent craftsmen in the future.
The man who is spark-plugging California's economic progress is the modern craftsman. He has the skill and judgment to stretch the horizons of his craft. He deserves respect. He has earned it—and we need to build more like him through apprenticeship.
Zoos in several eastern United States cities save the feathers shed by their various bird exhibits. As a favor, they send them to Indians on U.S. western reservations to be used in their war bonnets.
Automatic post offices employing mechanical "brains" will soon provide any address requested in a community in less than a second. That is how postmen will find remote lanes in zones where mail is not regularly delivered.
