HEALTH and SCIENCE THE FIGHT AGAINST PAIN Man's fight against pain is as old as he is. Priest-physicians of ancient Egypt blamed demons in the patient's body for his misery, and stamped and jumped on the victim, hoping to maim the offending spirits. Instead, they caused more pain, and often serious injury to the sufferer. Modern painless surgery began October 16, 1846, when Dr. William Morton, a dentist, who long had sought an anesthetic that would render the patient unconscious, administered sulfuric ether in preparation for surgery. Dr. John Warren successfully removed a tumor at Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital and delightedly exclaimed, "Gentlemen, this is no humbug." Though the agonies of surgery had been eliminated, many ailments still plagued daily life. One effective analgesic was aspirin, acetyl salicylic acid. Chief drawback was that pain relief was not lasting. Latest advance in lasting pain relief is Super Susdamin 2-12, a new "chemo-static control" tablet, providing sustained release of medicine into the system. Arthritis and rheumatism sufferers who take it only twice daily now can sleep through the night for the first time. Available without prescription, it is completely safe.
