This figure, as of June 30, represents a gain of $506,661,913 at the same date a year ago. President S. Clark Beise at bank's head office in San Francisco reported that net operating earnings for the first six months after provision for taxes, with $35,108,766 or $1.37 per share, the 25,600,000 shares outstanding. "Although this amount is several cents per share lower than the same period in 1956," Beise said, "the net results evident that improved income during first half of the year has substantially compensated for ad costs of the increased interest rates now being paid our more than four million savings deposits." "It should be noted," Beise continued, "that savings and other time deposits have increased consistently since the first of year and are now $282,196 higher than on January 1." After transfer of $5,000,000 to the reserve for possible loan losses, resulting in a tax saving of $2,366,000, a total of $32,775,-515 was available for dividends and addition to capital funds. Of this total, dividends amounting to $23,040,000 were paid to more than 200,000 shareholders during the six months at the regular annual dividend rate of $1.80 per share. This is $1,920,-000 more than was paid in the similar 1956 period. AVIATION GUNNER Qualified in aviation gunnery and as a carrier pilot May 28, was Naval Cadet Lee R. Brooks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph R. Brooks of 529 West Vermont, Anaheim. Cadet Brooks attended the University of Southern California before entering the service. Call KE 5-2206 for Want Ads Truck Weighing Crews to be Here July 17 to 19 A specially-trained, 27-member survey crew of the California Division of Highways is beginning a series of truck weighing operations that will be carried on at 37 selected locations along streets and highways throughout the state during the next two and a half months. State Highway Engineer G. T. McCoy announced today. The group will be in Anaheim from Wednesday morning, July 17, to Friday morning, July 19. The surveys are being made to determine the amount and weight of truck traffic on highways within California and are being carried on as one of the requirements of the 1956 Federal-Aid Highway Act. Although Division of Highways personnel are making the survey, the project is a joint study conducted by the State and the U. S. Bureau of Public Roads. The weighing will be on a sampling basis and will be conducted as a round-the-clock operation necessitating three shifts of survey interviewers so that a representative report of the truck traffic at each location can be obtained. At locations where there are no permanent truck scale installations, the crew will use a portable scale furnished by California Highway Patrol. The surveys will be conducted on state highways, county and city streets at selected tions as far north as Arro Humboldt County and south as Brawley in Inlet County. Curtice, president of GM announced today. Importing of limited numbers of the new Vauxhall Victor, built in England, and the Opel Rekord, produced in West Germany, will begin in September. The redesigned Vauxhall and Opel retain those features that are essential in foreign markets but both will offer advanced styling and engineering features "which have proven to be highly acceptable in our American products." Mr. Curtice said in a letter to GM distributors and dealers in which he announced the new plans. Distribution of the Vauxhall line will be handled in this county by GM's Pontiac Motor Division and the Opel line by Buick Motor Division.
