IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO 75 Years Ago... Oct.-1881 Two bears and three cubs came down from the Sierra Madre last week and killed two cows belonging to Mr. Giddings at the foot of the mountains above Pasadena. We learn that Sheriff Rowland has leased one thousand acres of his ranch to farmers on shares. The lessees will plant the land to flax, from which they expect to realize a handsome return. The same parties last year netted $2500 from one hundred acres grown to flax in another part of the county. From the semi-annual statement of the First National Bank of Los Angeles we see that it has resources to the amount of $960,581 and that it has in deposits $608,795. The bank is one of the most solid financial institutions in the state. The Rev. A. G. Trew will officiate at St. Michael's church Sunday morning and celebrate the Holy Communion having exchanged services with the Missionary in charge who will be in San Gabriel on that day. The subject of Mr. Trew's sermon will be "A remarkable discovery made in Egypt in June, 1881." The following extracts are available in the summer months with but little loss by seepage. An organization known as Disciples of Christ has filed articles of incorporation with the secretary of stale. The principle place of business is in Los Angeles, and the incorporators are W. J. A. Smith, W. S. Harper, F. S. Clough, F. M. Coulter and B. F. Coulter. 50 Years Ago... October-1906 Ben Dresser writes from Portland, renewing his subscription and sending regards to his friends. Ben conducts one of the largest grocery establishments in Portland and is doing well. The marriage of Theophelus Jones and Mrs. Ramella, popular young people of this city, is announced. We join their many friends in extending the felicitations of the season. United States Senator Perkins will speak in Santa Ana on Saturday evening on political issues. Wm. Crowther on Monday received a new Stanley Steamer touring car and was in town with it for the first time this afternoon. It is a beauty. T. A. Darling and S. A. Littlefield returned from a six weeks prospecting tour to the north of Imperial where they located a number of rich mineral claims. I. The old hand-engine which earned every dollar of its worth in the Planters hotel fire fifteen years ago has been discarded and will probably be sold. Direct pressure from the power house in time of fire permits the fire department to throw a number of streams 200 feet high. Evah Drennon, president, presided. During the business session new members welcomed into the club were: Mrs. Clara Stagner, bookkeeper at Glenco Citrus Products Company, and Miss Carol Wallace, secretary at United Processors. Members reporting on the San Orco District meeting at Laguna, Oct. 20-21 were Marguerite Harris, Arline McLaine and Eleanor Barthelmes. Seventeen from Anaheim registered at this meeting, the largest number from any other club. Three state chairmen presented Saturday afternoon's program. Millard Sheets, Director of Art at Claremont College, spoke on "The Art of Living". He pointed out that in the complex world in which we live everyone has need for the "Arts" among them religion, music, literature, etc. Training of the younger generation in the arts is important but Mr. Sheets urged getting acquainted with ones self in the world of art. The banquet decorations were Anaheim's part in this district meeting. Mrs. Dorothy Ford, second vice-president of California Federation B-PW Clubs, Inc., was the speaker at the Sunday morning session. She is Consultant in Business and Distributive Education for the County of Los Angeles. She spoke on "Bringing DuPont Circle to San Orco." Early this year, national BPWC headquarters moved from New York to DuPont Circle Building, Washington, D.C. This move was the fulfillment of a dream of 27 years. True to the Federation's objectives: To elevate the standards, to promote the interest, to bring about a spirit of cooperation and to extend opportunities to women, the National Foundation Research Center has been established. Mrs. Ford pointed out the progress this represents to women everywhere. Program coordinator Emma Lawrence introduced the speaker of the Wednesday evening meeting, Delois Chronister of Hurst Jewelers, whose subject was "Jewelry". The quality of gems are judged by color, transparency, hardness and rarity. The precious gems are diamonds, emeralds, ruby and sapphire. All others are semi-precious.
