Car Owners To Get Reflector License Sticker
Your California vehicle registration will be renewed for next year by attachment of a reflectorized red sticker, marked for 1957, to your rear license plate.
The Department of Motor Vehicles announces that annual renewal procedures otherwise will include the features familiar in recent years. Pre-punched cards setting forth fees for the new year will be mailed to all registered owners of vehicles immediately after Christmas. Applications for the validated registration cards and stickers will be received at 115 DMV field offices, at additional points served by traveling registration crews, at 100 temporary stations in selected banks, by authorized auto clubs and associations, and by mail.
Paul Mason, State Director of Motor Vehicles, said the stickers will replace the metal tab issued in/former years as a renewal token. They are red in color, with black letters and numerals reading "California 1957", and are 1½ by 1½ inches in size.
"The motoring public will find several advantages in this device," Mason said. "They are easier to attach to the rear license plate than the metal tabs. They reflect light, thus adding a new visibility point to the rear end of the vehicle and adding a safety factor in night driving. Finally, they cannot be removed from a license plate without being destroyed or mutilated, thus adding a protection against theft or fraud, or evasion of the law by illegal transfer."
The renewal period dates are from Jan. 2 through Feb. 4, 1957. A small number of motorists who purchase vehicles after Dec. 1, 1956, will be required under the law to register for the full year 1957, and will receive their 57 certificates and sticker upon registration.

Orange Industry Looking For Fruit Preservative
Sunkist Growers, California's citrus marketing cooperative through its affiliate, Fruit Growers Supply Company, today made a grant of $30,000 to the University of California for financing further studies in methods of protecting fresh fruits from decay during transit from California groves to eastern grocery stores.
The money will be used at the University's Citrus Experiment Station at Riverside. It is to provide scientific personnel and apparatus to further research which has been underway in this field since 1953.
The citrus industry, which for nearly half a century, had shipped its fruit in the traditional wood "orange crate" switched over to the use of a fiberboard container one-half the size of the wood crate about five years ago.
Principally because there is not as much ventilation in the closed fiberboard box as there was in the slotted wood container, citrus fruit has been subject to varying degrees of spoilage during the six day trip by rail eastern seaboard.
Various materials, fungiats, have been hard decay in the cartridges. Citrus Experiment led in the research a merit of these fungiats citrus industry in the years.
The most promising decay-retarding material ammonia pellet, which ed on by the moist fruit, releases a vapor quickly dissipated through carton. This vapor is odorless, tasteless and residue on the fruit, pears to keep some in good condition for a period of time. Oddly results vary between variant of citrus ing quality of volence for instance, is vast yet the tests with la been unsatisfactory.

Local Girl In SC Singing Group
Harriet I. Hoffner of Anaheim, a member of the University of California Trouble Club, is one of 178 students who will perform in various productions put on by the singing groups during the year.
six day trip by railroad to the eastern seaboard.
Various materials, known as fungistats, have been used to retard decay in the cartons and the Citrus Experiment Station has led in the research and development of these fungistats for the citrus industry in the past few years.
The most promising of these decay-retarding materials is ammonia pellet, which when acted on by the moisture in the fruit, releases a vapor which is quickly dissipated throughout the carton. This vapor is completely odorless, tasteless and leaves no residue on the fruit, yet it appears to keep some citrus fruits in good condition for an extended period of time. Oddly enough, the results vary between the different varieties of citrus. The keeping quality of velencia oranges, for instance, is vastly improved yet the tests with lamans have been unsatisfactory.
Miss Hoffner, 15, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dorrell L. Hoffner of 739 N. Pine. A graduate of Anaheim Union High School she is a Freshman here intending to major in general curriculum.
The next event scheduled for the Glee Club and Treble Clef is the annual singing festival they sponsor for northern and central California high school students. More than 3,000 students from about 50 high schools will come to the University for the event which takes place Saturday, Nov. 3.
Christmas carolling during the holiday season is a traditional feature for the two singing groups. Carolling is done on and around campus and in San Francisco.
A highlight of the year for the Glee Club is a ten day singing tour of northern California between semesters late in January. Performances are put on in local auditoriums and in high schools.
April will be a busy month for both groups. The Treble Clef will combine with the visiting University of Michigan Glee Club for a concert. Later in the month the Cal Glee Club and Treble Clef will sing with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. This event was started last year.
