Liberal Arts of Whittier College Brought to Anaheim
The Liberal Arts Center for Adults at Whittier College, started two years ago as the first full scale program of its kind in the nation, showed new signs of expansion this week with the announcement of its fall program by Director Betty Unterberger. A new expanded program will bring the non-credit liberal arts courses into Anaheim, Garden Grove, Laguna Beach and Monterey Park for the first time. Additional courses will also be added in Covina, Downey, Fullerton, La Habra, La Mirada and Whittier. A record number of courses totaling 31 will be offered, including two new programs in "Russian Foreign Policy" and "An Introduction to Modern Poetry".
Beginning with a reception for all leaders at the home of Dr. Paul S. Smith, president of Whittier College on Sunday, August 19, a series of evening and weekend leadership training sessions will be held at the Center, at the Statler Hotel, and at Carlsbad.
A new innovation in the leadership training program this fall will be joint sessions with leaders from the Liberal Arts Center at U C L A and in Pasadena.
Whittier's success pattern in non-credit liberal arts for adults recently drew considerable praise from the eight colleges across the nation that, during the past year, established programs patterned after the Whittier Center at a national conference at Estes Park in Colorado.

Increase Seen in Car Registrations
With one exception, the number of registered vehicles in California, county by county, continued to increase for the first six months of 1956, it was reported by State Director of Motor Vehicles Paul Mason.
The exception was Alpine County, which showed a decrease of 20 per cent, from 414 registered vehicles in the first half of 1955 to 346 in the same period this year.
Counties with the highest increase this year are Inyo and Orange, each up 22 per cent. Orange County has a total of 210,989 registrations, of which there were 172,417 autos, 19,877 trucks, 16,967 trailers and 1,728 motorcycles.
Los Angeles County, with 41 per cent of all vehicles registered in the state, showed a first-half increase of 7 per cent.
The state total of fee-paid registered vehicles for the current year period, January 1 through June 30, was 6,594,140, an increase of 8 percent. In addition, there were registered 79,557 exempt vehicles, making a grand total of 6,673,697.

Some 210 employees of Southern County Gas Co., Orange County Division, and their families—more than 630 persons, in all—enjoyed the division’s annual picnic at Brea last Saturday.
There were games, prizes, and a pony wagon for the youngsters, volleyball, horseshoes and softball for the grown-ups, and barbecued steaks, beans, salad and ice cream for all.
Host for the get-together—a yearly occurrence eagerly awaited by all—was Justin M. Kennedy, Orange County Division manager for the gas company.
Co-chairmen for the picnic were Marshall Nelson, a sales representative—promotion, from Santa Ana; and Dispatcher Simone Toelle, also of Santa Ana.
More than 20 gas company employees served on the various committees planning the picnic.
Lake Superior is the largest inland body of fresh water in the world.
OHIO CLUB PICNIC
The Orange County Ohio Club has planned a covered-dish picnic for Friday evening at 6 o'clock. Santiago Park in Santa Ana. Coffee and cream will be furnished by the club. An interesting program has been arranged and all former residents of Ohio are invited to attend, even though they are not members of the local club.
The benefits of a retirement program and the civil service status of state traffic officers offers strong inducements to qualified men to apply for this examination. It is anticipated at least 6,000 or 7,000 young men will file for the written examination before the deadline on Sept. 14, 1956.
Further information concerning the position and examination may be secured from any patrol office in the state.
