LOS ANGELES shows will be held. Morning shows are at 8:30, afternoon shows at 1 o'clock and the evening show at 7:30. The performance classes include such events as English Pleasure and three-gaited, Western Hackamore and Stock and Pleasure, Driving, Junior Equitation, the popular Arabian Costume classes and the spectacular cutting horse events using cattle. Well over 200 horses have been entered. The show has consistently been the largest all-Arabian show in the world, and the horses are as fine as will be seen anywhere in the world. From Anaheim will come the oldest purebred and registered mare in the county and the youngest foal in the county. The mare, Nirah, now 23 years old, was the first registered mare in this county and had the first registered foal in the county. She is the recognized queen-mother at the Doesken ranch at 8632 E. Ball Rd. Latest prince to challenge her popularity is the month old foal, Shaan, who will be at the show with her mother, Shangri-La. Also showing the ability to work in the hackamore under the guidance of Johnny Hayes and owned by Mrs. Mary Doesken, as are the above horses, will be Shaan's five year old gray brother, Khalek, who has been a consistent winner in shows in Las Vegas, Santa Barbara and other California localities. Mr. and Mrs. V. E. Oppegard, also of Ball Rd. in Anaheim, will show their stallion colt, Roaya-lad, who has consistently brought ribbons home to their ranch. Mr. Oppegard will also show horses for the Parnell School at Whittier. Orange County Arabian Horse breeders have long sought to bring the show to Orange County. Horses from southern California, which has the largest concentration of horses of this breed in the world, are joined in this show by representatives from many western states as well as northern California. It is indeed an opportunity for those interested in fine horses to see some of the finest. It takes the shape of a giant, drop-bottom barge, almost as long as a football field. It's first of a fleet of six which will be used by Southern Pacific railroad in a $49 million project to build a solid, dry-land roadbed across that inland sea. The monster-size barges, believed to be the largest of their kind yet built, will each carry 2,000 cubic yards of rock and gravel every time they shuttle from shore loading points to deep water at the middle of the lake. Their task will be to dump some 31,500,000 cubic yards of material to create, in the next four years, a 13-mile long embankment. This will connect 18 miles of existing shallow water fill and replace the famed wooden trestle built by Southern Pacific 52 years ago. Scene of the launching is Utah's newest "seaport," on the western shore of the historic Promontory Peninsula. This is 28.5 miles south of the spot where Leland Stanford, president of the Central Pacific—pioneer parent of Southern Pacific—drove the famous "Last Spike" in May, 1869, to complete the first transcontinental railroad. Three dredges, which were also shipped here in sections by Southern Pacific, have scooped from the shallow mud-lined shore a large harbor and a 3.2 mile channel leading to deep water. The annual copper production in the United States is worth more than 100 million dollars.
