State Historical Society Buys 1st Permanent Home
The California Historical Society is announcing purchase of its first permanent home, an early-day mansion at the corner of Laguna and Jackson Streets in San Francisco.
The announcement was made today by the Board of Directors, through Joseph R. Knowland, president of the society.
The directors, including President Knowland, are Francis P. Farquhar, first vice-president; Homer D. Crotty, second vice-president; Ralph H. Cross, Sr., third vice-president; Warren R. Howell, secretary; Harry East Miller, Jr., treasurer; Kenneth K. Bechtel; Allen L. Chickering, Sr.; Colbert Goldwell; Mrs. Richard Y. Dakin; Aubrey Drury; George L. Harding; A. T. Leonard, Jr., M.D.; Carl I. Wheat and Mrs. Dean Witter.
The 30-room, three-story red sandstone mansion on the northeast corner of Jackson and Laguna Streets was built over 60 years ago by William Frank Whittier, pioneer San Francisco paint dealer and capitalist. Later he founded the town of Hemet.
In 1902, The residence was considered by a group of California architects to be one of San Francisco's seven most architecturally perfect and bueatiful homes. It remains one of the city's great victorian residences. Others have long since been demolished, converted into apartments or lost in the 1806 earthquake-fire.
The site overlooks the Golden Gate with a sweeping view of the bay. It was constructed over a two-year period by Edward R.
Swain, a well known 19th century architect, for Whittier, senior partner of Whittier, Fuller Co.
It was completed for the Whittier family's occupancy in August 1896. On the Following Easter Monday the Whittier's young daughter was married there by William Boyd Wier.
In 1941, the mansion achieved a short-termed notoriety when it was purchased for the quarters of Adolf Hitler's San Francisco German Consulate. The Connie Fritz Wiedemann, an elaborate party-giver, fled the country due to the advent of the U.S. declaration of war. The residence was held throughout the war period by the Alien property custodian. Following the war, it againverted to private ownership.
There are 3,500 square feet each floor suitable for the society use.
Imported wood panelling in German silver fittings add to beauty of the interior. The car and massive oak entrance leads to a hall, 24 by 32 feet solid oak.
A large living room adjoin oriental smoking room are paneled in solid mahogany. The dining room is finished in tamano wood an imported hardwood of extra distinctoin. Oversized fireplaces are of Italian marble. The living room fireplace is arched by a mendous mantel of hand-carved mahogany.

Pure Gold To Participate In New Carton Plant
Participation of Pure Gold Supply Company, Redlands, in the construction of a new corrugated container manufacturing plant to be erected in the vicinity of Los Angeles by Growers Container Corporation, Salinas, was announced today by Glenn A. Harriott president of the cooperative purchasing unit of Pure Gold.
The alliance is the culmination of many weeks of negotiation between the two organizations and, in the words of Bruce Church president of Growers Container Corporation, "will mutually benefit both associations. Pure Gold Supply Company will gain a guaranteed source of supply of top quality citrus cartons and Growers Container Corporation, who will operate the new plant, will be assured a year-round outlet for a substantial portion of the new plant's production."
Both Pure Gold and Growers Container Corporation pioneered and developed the use of corrugated containers in their respective fields.
Pure Gold Supply Company, wholly owned subsidiary of Pure Gold, pioneer California citrus marketing agency, is a cooperative non-profit association organized for the purpose of furnishing packing and growing supplies at cost to the member patrons of Pure Gold. general manager, and John M.
Van Horn, assistant general manager, who will function as operational head of the new unit.
"In view of the intense interest in corrugated containers and the rapidity with which the fruit and vegetable industries are converting to the new container, this alliance marks an important milestone in Pure Gold's progressive march toward furnishing to its grower-members the highest possible returns for their fruit," declared Van Horn at the signing of the agreement between the two companies.
While a site has not yet been selected for the new plant, it is expected to be located in the vicinity of Los Angeles and it is planned to be in production by January 1, 1957. Location of the plant in this area was deemed advisable in that the bulk of the Pure Gold packers can be more satisfactorily serviced from this district and better service also can be rendered both to the carton users in Imperial Valley and Ardenza for packing lettuce, celery, tomatoes, and other produce items, and to the rapidly expanding demands of industry in the greater Los Angeles area.
SUB-DEB OFFICERS
New officers of the AUHS Sub-Deb club, composed of girl students with 'B' average and above, are Linda Blakely, pres., Carol Strachan, vice pres.; Judy Leimcke, sec.; Sigrid Mittman, treas.; and Ruth Mungerson, Red Cross representative.
Panfrying Method
To be assured of top results in a meat dish, be sure you use the proper meat cookery method. When panfrying, brown the meat on both sides in a small amount of lard or drippings, season with salt and pepper. Cook at moderate temperature until done, turning occasionally. Do not cover pan. Remove from pan and serve at once.
