Seattle Seafair Offers Excitement SEATTLE SEAFAIR Queen Beverly Kaye Smith (center) who will reign over the Queen City's 1856 maritime marini gras this summer, extends a fetching invitation to attend the water carnival, August 3-12. Queen Beverly displays the $25,000 purse and U.S. Championship trophy (Picture No. 1) which goes to the winners of the unlimited hydroplane race on Seattle's Lake Washington. First of over 160 attractions in Seafair is the Grand Parade (Picture No. 2) on August 4, one of 10 parades by night and day during the 10-day fete. Nautical highlight will be the arrival of the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet on August 8 (Picture No. 3) with a sea-going parade around Seattle's harbor followed by liberty for thousands of sailors. The national championship race (Picture No. 4) is billed as the Kentucky-Derby of speedboat racing and attracted some 500,000 spectators last summer. The 1956 race day is Sunday; August 5. Chief fun-makers for the Seafair is a roving pirate gang led by Davy Jones and Captain Kidd (Picture No. 5) who demonstrate their technique for TV-star Arlene Francis. Oscar Malmgren Claimed By Death Oscar Malmgren, born in Sweden 71 years ago, coming to America in 1914 and to California in 1941, residing in Anaheim for two years, died Saturday afternoon at the family home, 838 N. Lemon St., after a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife, Janiece; two daughters, Mrs. Lennia Swift of Sioux City, Iowa, and Mrs. Hazel Daigle of Compton; three sons, Charles, Louis and Dannie Roberson, all of Van Nuys; one sister, Mrs. Elsie Johnson of Nebraska; three brothers, Jhime Johnson in Nebraska and two brothers in Sweden and six grandchildren. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. The annual Tri-Hi-Y dessert meeting was enjoyed by members and their mothers on Tuesday night, May 8, in Fellowship Hall of White Temple Church. Each club entered the decorating competition. Judges found it difficult to decide on which tables were most beautifully and originally done. The Y-Meisjes presented a fashion show through the co-operation of Clarice Sportswear. Annual awards were presented. In charge of arrangements was the executive committee headed by Carol Wilkinson. A delightful junior high affair is scheduled at the same place. Junior high girls have invited their mothers to attend a doll-tea at 7 p.m. The youngsters have been rehabilitating dolls for Goodwill Industries and will display them, the Goodwill Women's Auxiliary to present prizes. Mrs. Robert Carrett, chairman of the committee on arrangements, has announced that girls of the ninth grade will be hostesses. The Triple Trio of the First Presbyterian Church will entertain. A fashion showing of old time costumes will be presented by the Auxiliary of the Goodwill Industries. Camp sign up for Camp Osceola has been set for May 17 beginning at 4 p.m. It will be done on a firstheim 'Y' girls are to share camp with those of Orange Coast and Orange on a quota basis. On May 22, the Women’s Committee will sponsor an annual reception for senior Tri-Hi-Y girls at the home of Mrs. Walter Taylor, well known educator, Dr. Clara Hale will speak on the subject, "So You Think You Want to Get Married". Committee members will be hostesses. GUEST SPEAKER On Mother’s Day, Mrs. Susanna Kernahan, mother of the pastor, Rev. Earl Kernahan is to be the pulpit guest at White Temple Church. She is an ordained minister who has served in Washington, D.C., Williams, Ariz., and Phoenix, Ariz., before going to her present post in Tighland, Cal. Mrs. Kernahan has two sons in the ministry; her husband and three brothers were ministers, her father had a local preachers’ license, and her grandfather was a circuit rider responsible for the establishment of many of the first congregations in Iowa. P-TA COUNCIL, INSTALLS Mrs. J. J. Vernon, past-president of fourth district, California P-TA was installing officer at the Anaheim Council of P-TA..
