DRIVER EDUCATION GIVEN RECORD BREAKING PONTIAC The 500,000th 1955 Pontiac, which came off the assembly lines this week, was presented to the American Automobile Association in Washington, D.C., Friday, by R. M. Critchfield, vice-president of General Motors and general manager of Pontiac Motor division. The car, a Safari custom station wagon, was given the AAA for the use of Professor Amos E. Neyhart, "father" of High School Driver Education. Neyhart is administrative head of the Institute of Public Safety of Pennsylvania State University, and AAA Consultant on Road Training. "Twenty years ago, AAA came to the Pontiac Motor Division for help," Critchfield said in making the award. Courses and text material had been prepared by the AAA, but there were no cars available for training the teachers and starting the schools. Pontiac contributed four cars and equipped them with dual controls. For a number of years Pontiac supplied all the cars loaned to high schools for this purpose. In 1936, four schools began giving the courses. Last year, more than 400,000 students took behind-the-wheel driver education courses using 6700 cars contributed by civic-minded automobile dealers throughout the country. "Nearly three million high school students have received behind-the-wheel courses since they began in 1936. A score of impartial surveys prove conclusively that graduates of these driver education courses have at least 50% fewer accidents than those who have not had driver education, and in many instances lower insurance rates are offered young trained drivers," Critchfield said. "Credit for this amazing deduction in traffic accidents must go to the educators, Professor Neyhart, the AAA and others who have advanced High School Driver Education. We hope this 500,000th 1955 Pontiac will be instrumental in furthering the cause of traffic and safety. It is our sincere hope that before long, every high school student in the Nation will be given the advantages of this valuable and important training," Critchfield continued. "This 1955 Pontiac set a new record of production in a model year for us. Let us hope it will help produce a record year in AAA's very worthwhile efforts." President Andrew J. Sordoni accepted the keys to the car for the AAA, and turned them over to Neyhart. Russell E. Singer, executive vice-president, and Burton W. Marsh, director of Traffle Engineering and Safety Department of the AAA; were among those who attended the brief ceremony in front of the Association's national headquarters in Washington, D.C.
