Town Meeting to Be Reviewed as Aid to Schools A large-scale revival of the old "town meeting" method for solving school problems may be in the offing, according to anouncements made today by the National Citizens Commission for the Public Schools and the National School Boards association. Both groups have set up a program to inspire and service "a conference on education in every community" in order to fortify President Eisenhower's program for state-wide and territorial education conferences culminating in the White House Conference on Education Nov. 28-Dec. 1, of this year. The NCCRS, a non-profit school improvement group, set to disband in May, 1955, has extended its charter through Jan. 31, 1956. According to Roy E. Larsen, Commission chairman and president of Time, Inc., the decision was made "so that our Commission can help inspire Americans on the local level to sit down together and discuss the problems facing their public schools and find solutions for them." And that's just a beginning. Keeping on wheels and supplying you with the amount and one "oil-born" products so to modern living requires 2 gallons of oil a day for every man, woman and child in the U.S.—an increase of 58% since 1955. Helping to keep this oil flowing to your Standard Oil Company of California's largest, most expensive, least predictable in fact, we plan to invest $200 million in 1955 alone in exploring the new oils and developing existing ones, to help place the petroleum you'll use. One 700 times this year, Standard drillers will start bits spinning. As much as 16,000 feet of pipe may follow the bit before oil is found or the well is abandoned. Either way it's a costly hole; drilling an oil well may run from $125,000 to over $1 million. And every one is a risk—only 1 out of every 9 wells drilled in the U.S. in a promising but unproven area turns out to be an oil producer. Yet new sources of oil must be found to keep our nation's supplies from dwindling. Bisking "dry holes" is the only way to find them. So the 125 "dry holes" we drilled last year are good evidence of the job Standard does to help keep you on wheels.
