Captain and Mrs. Henry came here in 1868 with their first child, Innes, who was two years old. Mr. Henry purchased 160 acres of land west of town and planted a vineyard. When the blight of 1886 destroyed the vineyards in this section, he turned his attention to citrus and walnut culture. About 15 years ago he retired, sold his fine ranch on Lincoln Avenue, and built a comfortable home at the corner of Broadway and Philadelphia where he and his wife have since lived. Mr. Henry was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on February 15, 1838. When only a boy he joined the English Navy and was attached to Sir Charles Napier's Baltic U.S.D.A. Mr. Henry died ten days after the passing of his wife and a week following his 91st birthday. When Captain and Mrs. Henry landed here sixty-one years ago, they found only a small frontier hamlet, surrounded by a wilderness of virgin land overgrown with wild mustard and cactus and over-run with wild cattle and horses from the great ranchos. They left three sons—Innes, John and Archie, several grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Backs, Terry & Campbell's chapel, Dr. Benjamin S. Haywood being in charge. Other Stars returning signed contracts were Outfielders Frank Kelleher and Ted Beard. Pitcher Mel Queen also affixed his name to a Twink contract following a conference with Bob Clements, Stars vice-president and director of player personnel.
