Decline Reported in Both Employment-Unemployment
Seasonal declines in several industries and the withdrawal of many persons from the labor market brought a decrease in both employment and unemployment in California between September and October, according to Paul Scharrenberg, director of the State Department of Industrial Relations and William A. Burkett, director of the State Department of Employment.
Employment dropped by 25,000 to an estimated total of 5,127,000, largely because of the usual autumn decline in the food processing, lumber and fabricated metal industries, and productions in the motion picture, hotel and amusement fields.
"The October estimate of employment was made prior to the beginning of a major work stoppage in the aircraft industry," Scharrenberg said. "Prior to the stoppage, employment in that industry had been expanding."
The number of unemployed workers was estimated at 121,000 in October, down by 9,000 from the September level.
"Unemployment was somewhat higher among workers covered by unemployment insurance, but this rise was more than offset by a reduction in the number of non-covered unemployed, particularly agricultural workers," Burkett pointed out.
The total civilian labor force, which includes both employed and unemployed workers, totaled 5,248,000 in October, 34,000 below the September level but 123,000 higher than in October of 1931.

Drivers find gasoline cost per mile down 20%
To compare gasoline values now with the "good old days," test drivers at Standard ran popular cars of the 1920's on 1925 gas, '53 models of the same makes on today's gas, and '53 models modified to use 1925 gas. All cars were driven over the same course, on the same amount of fuel till they ran out of gas. The results may surprise you.
Today's gasoline gives you, under comparable driving conditions, 50% more miles per gallon than in 1925! What does it mean to you? Suppose you started on a trip from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe with 12 gallons of gasoline—a route covering all kinds of driving. In the old car with 1925 gas, you'd travel about 131 miles; in the new car modified for 1925 gasoline you'd go 149 miles; but in the new car with today's gasoline, you'd go all the way to Lake Tahoe, 196 miles. Improved auto engines explain part of this—but better gasoline made them possible. You benefit stealth from the competition in research and erating efficiency between Standard other oil companies. Competition steps gasoline quality, helps hold prices down. While living costs have risen 54% in last 28 years, today's gasoline costs only 22% more a gallon (except for taxes) gasoline cost per mile has dropped one f

Rev. Casebeer
PTA Speaker
The Rev. Al Casebeer of the First Christian church traced the history of Thanksgiving when he was speaker at the Thomas Jefferson PTA at the November meeting. "Thanksgiving; Expressing Thanks Every Day," was the theme of the meeting and was carried out in a musical program by second grade students.
The president, Mrs. Clyde Dunton, presided for committee reports and then turned the meeting over to Mrs. Ted DeVilbis, inspirational chairman, and Mrs. Floyd Boyer, program chairman.
Rate Increase Boosts State Gas Tax Revenue by Forty Per Cent
2:30 RATE INCREASE
Sacramento—Gross revenues derived from the 6-cent state tax on September distributions of 361,850,598 gallons of gasoline and other high-test motor fuel in California amounted to $21,711,036 according to William G. Bonelli, chairman of the State Board of Equalization. While only a normal 4.7 percent increase in gallonage over that of a year agi was reported, gross revenues were up almost 40 percent largely because of the rate increase that went into effect on July 1.
Tax refunds by Controller Robert C. Kirkwood during the month to purchasers of fuel for non-highway use totaled $1,472,518, or 6.8 percent of the gross tax liabilities accruing during the month, leaving net revenues of $20,238,647 for expenditure on highway construction and maintenance. The percentage of refunds to new tax Because the legislature has advanced the due rate for diesel fuel tax returns, statistics on distributions of this type of fuel will no longer be included in the releases on gasoline distributions. Henceforth, use fuel tax collection data and other information on diesel fuel distributions will be separately reported on a quarterly basis.

The percentage of refunds to new tax liabilities was abnormally low because most of the refunds which are now being paid are at the pre-July tax rate of 4½ cents. This percentage is expected to rise gradually until it reaches about 10 percent.
During the first nine months of this calendar year, almost 3.2 billion gallons of taxable motor vehicle fuel were distributed by California refiners and importers, an increase of 5.8 percent over distributions in the comparable portion of 1952. Not included in this volume were almost 900 million gallons of high-test motor vehicle fuel distributed tax-free, mainly to exporters, to the United States Armed Forces for use in watercraft or airplanes, and to licensed dealers in butane and other liquefied petroleum gases.
