4 Anaheim Gazette THURSDAY, JULY 23, 1953 ANAHEIM, GALIFORNIA St. Michael's Youth Enjoy Beach Party at W. Phelps Home, Newport John Phelps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Phelps of Anaheim, was host on Sunday afternoon to the Young Peoples' Fellowship of St. Michael's Episcopal church at the family beach home on Bay Island, Newport. The teenagers enjoyed swimming, volleyball, and an outdoor supper cooked at the beach barbecue of the Phelps beautifully appointed summer home. The meal was a co-operative affair with the girls bringing home-made cup cakes, the boys supplying the pickles, relishes, etc. Weiners were donated by a butcher from Olive who is a member of the church. This tower atop Mount Blyn, Washington, is an intermediate station for radio-relay telephonic calls carried between Seattle and Victoria, B.C. UNDERWATER TELEPHONE CALLS TAKE TO THE S Radio-relay now carries many calls over Pacific coastal waters Long distance calls between Seattle and Vancouver Island, in Canada, are now traveling by air... beamed on microwaves from one radio-relay tower to another much as a searchlight's rays are directed. These calls were formerly carried through submarine cables on the floor of the 900-foot-deep Haro Strait. But, because of extreme tidal action, the Haro Strait telephone cable had to be replaced every three or four years. Now, the new radio-relay system will do the same communications job at less cost. Radio-relay helps keep costs of telephone service low Installing radio-relay facilities in place of submarine cable opens new voice highways and helps reduce the cost of providing service. This is one of many ways we are constantly improving telephone service while holding its cost down—keeping it so low, in fact, that your telephone remains one of your best buys today. YOUR TELEPHONE IS ONE OF TODAY'S BEST BARGAINS Catalina Island, too, is served by micro-radio. This link crosses the 25-mile ocean between the Island and the southern fornia mainland, supplementing services vided by submarine cable. And, here in Pacific West, more and more long distances as well as television programs, are carried radio-relay facilities. This, and other impressions in recent years, is one of the reasons long distance calls are going through fast days...in most cases, while you hold the Tennis Clubbers Depart for Tourney at SD As a reward for strenuous effort, members of the Anaheim Tennis club who have proven themselves superior in the 11, 13, 15 and 18 year age groups in local competition leave today to attend the junior championship meet in San Diego to be held Thursday through Sunday.
