11 Anaheim Gazette THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 1953 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Cypress' New Dial Phone Building Ready to Receive Automatic Setup Pacific Telephone's new dial telephone building in Cypress is virtually complete this week, ready to receive equipment to serve telephones in the western portion. Kwikset Shooters Outgun Opponents The Kwikset Gun club's rifle team recently outfired the Screw Machine Products' team, of South Gate, in a match held at the Anaheim Rifle range. Kwikset won 330.3 to 307.28. Possible score was 400. The teams fired from four positions. Bob Smiley, Joe Headlee, and Bruce Carter of Kwikset, placed 1, 2, 3, in the match with Les Keays, of South Gate, fourth. A coat of paint has been applied to the building's exterior and painters are proceeding with interior decoration. Gleaming new floors—4000 sq. feet of them—soon will be partially covered by tons of automatic telephone equipment. The equipment includes huge distributing frames, which fan out wires entering the office, and hunts of complicated switches. Also included will be large batteries and other power equipment to provide current for several hundred telephones to be identified with the new JAckson-7 prefix. The building cost Pacific Telephone more than $85,000 and the new equipment will amount to another $130,000. The new office is scheduled to be placed in operation this fall. Record Mail Haul Posted During May by Helicopter Mail Service Five hundred and eleven thousand pounds of air mail and parcel post, for an all-time high, was carried by the Los Angeles Airways, Inc., during May—over 20,000,000 letters were expedited on virtually a round-the-clock basis to most cities in Southern California. One thousand pounds per flying hour is an all-time high, and, according to Clarence M. Bellinn, president of Los Angeles Terminal annex rooftop that is necessary is to transfer them, for example, to TWA flight 20, which leaves the ramp 13 minutes after Los Angeles Airways' flight 4 lands alongside. "This is of tremendous economic significance, since it eliminates rehandling at the airport, as was done previously." Field transfers from the Los Angeles Terminal annex rooftop God Seen as Preserving Man In Lesson-Sermon The power of understanding faith in God, to preserve, cleanse, protect and guide man will be illustrated in the Sunday Lesson-Sermon, "God the Preserver of Man" in all Christian Science churches. These words from Proverbs (29:25) constitute the Golden Text: "Whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe." In a Scriptural selection from the Psalms (37:3, 55:17) David sang, "Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shall be fed ... Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray... and he shall hear my voice." Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Spirit duly feeds and clothes every object, as it appears in the line of spiritual creating, thus tenderly expressing the fatherhood and motherhood of God." Later she says, "In divine Science, man is sustained by God, the divine Principle of being." (pp. 507, 530). Five Public Forum Topics Scheduled Five illustrated lectures are to be presented by Fullerton public forum on the summer program during the five Thursdays of July. One thousand pounds per flying hour is an all-time high, and, according to Clarence M. Bellinn, president of Los Angeles Airways, "is only the beginning." On May 27, the company placed its third large Sikorsky S-55 helicopter into service. These are in addition to the smaller S-51 type which have been carrying the mail here for almost six years. The capacity of the new machines is almost double, so that for the first time in over three years the fleet capacity is equal to the mail generated. Five years ago, figures for the same period were 217,00 pounds. Several new operations innovations are being introduced along with these larger helicopters. "Of tremendous significance is the flying mail clerk." This added crew member is the "conductor." Many sacks of mail and parcels taken on at Van Nuys or Pasadena, for example, are labeled directly for eastern points, and the job of the conductor is to have them all assorted and waybilled so that all William Umland Dies in Balboa William J. Umland, a native of Moline, Ill., who came to Orange county 35 years ago and who was living at 925 E. Balboa Ave., at present, died last Wednesday afternoon at 108 Palm st., Balboa when he suffered a heart attack while driving his car. He is survived by his wife, Bess A. Umland; two daughters, Mrs. Thelma De Smet and Mrs. Beverlee Woods both of Sacramento; two brothers, Harry Umland of Davenport, Ia., and Walter Umland of Moline, Ill., one sister, Mrs. Florence Ishmael of Moline, and three granddaughters. He was a member of the Christian church and the Masonic lodge. Funeral services were conducted from the Hilgenfeld chapel last Friday at 2 o'clock. Rev. A. Casebeer, pastor of the Christian church, officiated, and burial was in Loma Vista Memorial Park. Field transfers from the Los Angeles Terminal annex rooftop have been the order of the day for years, but have been impractical for other cities until now. "We are of the opinion that this speed-up will increase, resulting in savings of time and cost." Walter Knott Elected All Year Club Director Walter Knott, owner of Knott's Berry Farm, and noted as a preserver of the West's ghost town lore, has been elected to the board of directors of the All-Year club of Southern California, it was announced today by George O'Brien, president of the community tourist advertising organization. Knott built a pie stand beside his berry farm at Buena Park, into a nationally famous eating place. A son of pioneers, he assembled relics from fast-vanishing mining camps of the West and put together a colorful replica ghost town at the farm. Recently he purchased the Ghost Town of Calico, near Barstow, outright, and set out on a non-profit program of restoration, because the old silver mining camp was fast disintegrating and he feared it would soon be lost altogether. The All-Year club carries on national advertising and promotion to build up the Southland's tourist business. The past year out-of-state tourists spent almost $500,000,000 in the area. Five Public Forum Topics Scheduled Five illustrated lectures are to be presented by Fullerton public forum on the summer program during the five Thursdays of July. SAVINGS INSURED TO $10,000 PUT YOUR MONEY County Beaches Get Time Limits For Camping Reflecting their popularity as summer camp sites, Doheny and San Clemente beaches state parks have been placed under the ten-day camping limit by the Division of Beaches and Parks. The limit is effective from June 1 to Sept. 30. Other state beaches and parks have 30-day or 14-day limits. However, only the two mentioned above have been limited in Orange county. According to Newton B. Drury, chief of the division, the limitation program is carried out to ensure that over-crowded campsites will not spoil vacations for those camping in the parks or on the beaches. A continuing study of campsite use is made to ascertain the necessity of the limits, he said.
