New "Brain" Goes to Work for $300 an Hour
OPERATION of IBM's newest electronic "brain" was inaugurated recently by board chairman Thomas J. Watson (seated) and Dr. Cuthbert C. Hurd, director of the organization's applied science division, at the company's World Headquarters in New York. Composed of eleven compact units, this new calculator is known as the Electronic Data Processing Machines, or, more commonly, as the "701." Having more than seventeen miles of wire, 4,000 electronic tubes and 13,600 germanium diodes, it is the first calculator of comparable capacity to be manufactured by production line techniques. Current plans call for the production of eighteen within a year. With almost unlimited "memory," it can add and subtract more than 16,000 times a second and multiply and divide more than 2,000 times a second. While solving a typical problem it is capable of performing 14,000 mathematical operations a second. From the control center, above, one operator can supervise the calculator and, when necessary, easily change the course of problem.

Dental Official Debunks Wonder Dentrifices; Brush most Effective
Los Angeles—Proper use of the toothbrush is far more important to dental health than all the "miracle" toothpastes together, the secretary of the American Dental Association declared here recently.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the Southern California State Dental Association, Dr. Harold Hillenbrand, of Chicago, criticized the prevalence of "distorted claims" in toothpaste advertising.
"The is still no green wonder or white miracle toothpaste that will magically prevent dental caries (tooth decay) and eradicate gingival (gum) disease," Dr. Hillenbrand said. "No such dentifrice will do anything that a suitable toothbrush properly used won't accomplish alone."
The dental executive emphasized that while none of these products in themselves are harmful to dental health, reliance on a "wonder" product at the expense of more important procedures necessary to dental health "can only lead to a grave accumulation of dental defects."
He said that dependency on a "cure-all" constitutes a highly uneconomical approach to dental health.
"Advertising misrepresentations can full t. credulous into a false sense of security in the belief that use of a particular product will somehow confer immunity to dental illness," Dr. Hillenbrand said.
As a result, there is the illhood that dental disorders will increase until there is no recourse except to complicated and extensive dental treatment that might well have been avoided by carers and simple dental health precautions.
Dr. Hillenbrand pointed out that despite an advertising crains, there has been no therapeutic denture accepted by the American Dental Associations Council on Dental Therapeutics which tests and evaluates dental products.

The dental executive added:
"The exaggerated and misleading claims could be ignored if they did not obscure the existence of very real preventive weapons that provide the only effective approach to a national health problem with almost 100 per cent incidence."
Dr. Hillenbrand pointed out that despite all advertising claims, there has been no therapeutic dentifrice accepted by the American Dental Association's Council on Dental Therapeutics which tests and evaluates dental products.
Therapeutic dentifrices are those making claims for special curative or protective qualities beyond that of conventional cleansing properties.
"No dentifrice has been clearly demonstrated to provide substantial benefits beyond some usefulness in assisting the brush in the cleansing process," he said. Dr. Hillenbrand quoted a report recently issued by the council, which said:
"The council deplores the current distorted claims in dentifrice advertising and urges that a skeptical attitude be maintained toward all dentifrice advertising which implies, that such products have a demonstrated usefulness beyond their ability to assist the toothbrush in cleansing the access-
