Only One Out of 20 Fatal Traffic Accidents in LA Occur on Freeways
Only one out of every 20 traffic fatalities in Los Angeles occurs on freeways. The other 19 auto deaths, 10 of which are pedestrians, are the result of accidents on the city's surface streets, the Public Safety Department of the Automobile Club of Southern California said today.
The injury record is even better. Only one out of every 28 traffic injuries in the city happens on freeways.
The Auto Club based its report on the latest Los Angeles Police Department records.
In 1952, 17 persons died in freeway accidents. Total city traffic deaths during the period was 290. Only 615 of the 17,189 traffic injuries in the city occurred on freeways.
The most impressive record occurred on the city's busiest traffic artery, the Hollywood Freeway. During the year two persons were killed and 169 injured on this freeway. It carries as many as 120,000 cars during peak days.
Seven deaths and 287 injuries occurred on the Arroyo Seco, which can carry 100,000 cars a day. Engineers attribute the lower accident rate on the newer Hollywood Freeway to improved designing.
Last year the Cahuenga Freeway was the site of four auto deaths and 157 injuries. The Cahuenga can handle 106,000 cars a day.
On the Ramona Freeway, where the peak load is 38,000 cars, two persons were killed and 50 injured.
One fatality occurred on both the Santa Ana and Harbor Freeways during 1952. Forty-seven injuries took place on the Santa Ana, which is capable of carrying 35,000 cars per day.
On the Harbor Freeway, where there is only six tenths of a mile completed, there were five injuries. A traffic count has not been made on it as yet.

"SMALL BUSINESS"
BY C. WILSON HARDER
The push to repeal U.S. tariff laws has humorous aspects.
The slogan of would-be repeal "Trade, Not Aid" is credited to Britain's finance minister.
Yet Britain, with colonies and minions all over the world, apparently cannot successfully trade in the commonwealth family.
A recent giveaway of paper and pulp by mutual Security Agency C.W. Harder highlights the situation.
On two successive days, MSA approved $3,700,000 in paper and help for England and France; England receiving $4,200,000 of the total allocation.
MSA stipulates almost half the total may be purchased Canada.
Thus, even for trade between England and one of her dominates, U.S. taxpayers must foot the bill.
American publishers forced to extortionate prices for newsprint, may take some comfort to try Canadian newsprint without aid, while England, home earth of British family, cannot rely without help by U.S. taxyers, even though U.S. dollar now discounted in Canada.
Canadian producers who control the bulk of newsprint need country out of the market. And in many American towns, the local paper suspends because of excessive newsprint prices.
Congressional committees investigating newsprint prices were told by former Secretary of State to keep hands off to avoid antagonizing Canadian newsprint producers.
So far as is known, present State Department has not taken a stand on the issue.
But newsprint situation is cited as perfect example why repeal of the U.S. tariff laws would accomplish nothing but eventual collapse of U.S. economy.
With European system of monopoly business fixing high prices, European consumers cannot afford to buy products of members under a common flag. Trade between them depends, strangely enough, on the generosity of the U.S. taxpayer.
Many claim basic reason for holding up Alaska statehood is traceable to newsprint cartel.
Alaskan pulp forests are vast. But under Federal control, private enterprise is hampered, even forbidden to develop Alaskan resources. Under statehood, control of resources would pass to the people resulting in almost immediate development of an Alaskan newsprint industry. Thus Alaska is kept from competing with the Canadian newsprint monopoly.
MSA is also active otherwise.
In March alone, 19 persons were brought into town photo.
M/SGT. JOHN W. HANDLEY of Buena Park, Calif., was an honor graduate of the recent Seventh army's non-commissioned officers' academy at Munich, Germany. The academy offers a six-weeks' leadership course for selected non-comms who are instructed in administrative work, weapons, tactics and latest army developments. Arriving in Germany last November, Handley has been serving as chief clerk in the 77th ordnance depot company. A veteran of service in Korea with the 833d ordnance company, the California master sergeant was previously stationed in the United States and assigned to a guided missile unit. His wife, Jessie lives at 6872 Manchester blvd., Buena Park—U.S. Army photo.
American publishers forced to extortionate prices for news print, may take some comfort that they at least manage to by Canadian newsprint without aid, while England, home earth of British family, cannot rely without help by U.S. taxyers, even though U.S. dollar now discounted in Canada.
Canadian producers who control the bulk of newsprint need by independent U.S. press, have more than tripled price in few years.
So what to all intents and appurances is a Canadian monopoly has priced the mother national Federation of Independent Business

In March alone, 19 persons were brought at taxpayers' expense from Austria, Greece, Italy, and Siam to study labor union finances, the trade union program, and consumer cooperative operation. However, none were brought over to study U.S. antitrust laws.
