PACKERS AND SHIPPERS OF VALENCIA ORANGES "KLAMATH" AND "OTTAWA" BRANDS — SINCE 1928 — L. M. Banks Camellias Bee For Anaheim Camellia culture has recently become a fascinating hobby for Mrs. Claude Slack, prominent Anaheim club women who lived at 523 So. Dickel st. By putting the cart before the horse, so to speak, Mrs. Slack became garden chairman of the Orange county Federation of Women's clubs and leader of the home and garden section of the Anaheim Ebell society before being bitten hard by the gardening bug. Her job mainly has been to arrange interesting gardening programs for the various club groups which necessitated close contact with amateur gardeners to determine the type of program most appealing and then contact with various experts in the field to work out the programs. In this she has been singuarly successful and as she encountered enthusiasm on all sides both from the amateur and professional gardeners, found the enthusiasm highly contagious. Mrs. Slack has always been attracted to the delicate waxy beauty of the camellia and when upon listening in on her own programs found how easy is their culture, she embarked on the hobby that promises to turn her backyard into a sort of under-the-sky living-room. Exterior Decorator From Joe Littlefield, well known Red Star garden consultant who spoke on summer shade gardens, she found that camellias do best in the moist soil of semi-shade. To provide the proper growing conditions, Mrs. Slack became her own exterior designer. BRANDS — SINCE 1928 — L. M. Banks PHONES; 7524 and 3517 500 S. CLAUDINA ST. ANAHEIM PASTURE FRESH Excelsior Homogenized Milk LABORATORY CONTROLLED Excelsior Milk PRIZE WINNING If You Live in Orange County... EXCELSIOR Exterior Decorator From Joe Littlefield, well known Red Star garden consultant who spoke on summer shade gardens, she found that camellias do best in the moist soil of semi-shade. To provide the proper growing conditions, Mrs. Slack became her own exterior decorator and planned a small outdoor room adjacent to the garage. Its basis is 12 x 14 foot cement slab outlined with deep trenches filled with one third soil, one third leaf hold and one third peat moss. An attractive overhead lattice frame work of lath filters the sun. Over thirty-five different varieties of camellias are growing vigorously in this improvised shade as well as in the natural shade provided by house and garden fence. Redwood settee and table and benches furnish the outdoor living room, and it is made more comfortable by roll-up banboo shades that can be adjusted to cut down or capture the breeze and the sun. Never a Gardener "I have never been a gardener," explains Mrs. Slack, "but this dabbling with camellias has really opened my eyes to its possibilities. These wonderful hardy plants have added to the beauty and enjoyment of our home as well as to its value. I find gardening fun and a challenge, a real adventure in creative expression." During the blooming season just over, Mrs. Slack especially enjoyed the waxy white blossoms of the Finlandia, the raggedy carnation type flowers of the Fred Sanders, and the variegated mottled effect of the Chanderii Elegans. Some other of her favorites are Debutante, Emperor, Wilhelm and the showy deep red Prof. Sargent. These are all choice varieties of the camellia japonica, the familiar bush type. She is currently experimenting with the unusual sa-sanqua, the type that has the looser blossoms similar to a wild rose. The California Spray Chemical corporation, manufacturers of Ortho products, supplied an informative moving picture of the beautiful and rare orchids of Hawaii, which was followed by a showing of Mrs. Slacks' own film made during her recent trip to the islands. COUNTY COMMENT By George E. Hart The so-called free tax ride, perennial subject matter of complaint by the incorporated cities against the unincorporated communities is likely to ride away like an old soldier, so far as Orange county is concerned, if the present trend toward incorporating continues. Up and down the state, the cities have been protesting that they are taxed to provide municipal-type services for the built-up urbancorporated communities. While it is a fact that the unincorporated communities of Orange county have formed assessment districts to supply their own needs for water, fire protection, sanitation, lighting, libraries and such, the cities have helped to pay for their police protection, through the sheriff's office. The cities also help support the county agricultural department which does the bulk of its work in the rural areas. Merit on Both Sides The agricultural areas, of course, retort that they are the main support of the cities, and that the rural areas are taxed for public health service which is rendered chiefly in the cities. But this does not comfort or pacify the cities. Four principal targets of complaint in Orange county have been the four most populous unincorporated communities, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Garden Grove and the Westminster - Midway City area. Within the present year Bueh Park has incorporated, and Costa Mesa is now preparing to vote on that move, with success pretty well assured. Garden Grove, which is growing all over the place in a phenomenal hour building boom, is said to be taking seriously of incorporating. If that happens, it would lead... And, of course, we would find Buena Park, Costa Mesa and Garden Grove over on the other side of the fence, joining the anvil chorus. They know the script very well. They've been listening to it long enough. Paternalism Indicted The new dependence on social security and government paternalism is the basis for an indictment of young professional men in at least one field, here in Orange county. A veteran Santa Ana civil engineer says the young engineers in his office aren't worth their salt and appear to be totally lacking in ambition to make a name for themselves in their profession, or work toward a practice of ANAHEIM GAZETTE SPRING EDITION—1953 their own. In trying to penetrate their indifference and discover its cause, he has talked earnestly with them. The best he can get is that they figure the government will take care of their later years and, in fact, support them meanwhile whenever they get fired for incompetence. His office is no exception, this engineer asserts. "Do no good to fire 'em," he growls. "I couldn't get any better replacements." Archaelogists have found traces of a prehistoric iron industry in Sarawak, Borneo, where today's tribes live close to the Stone Age, says the National Geographic Society. The present British Crown colony of Sarawak in Borneo was ruled from 1840 to 1946 as an independent country by "white rajas" of the Brooke family.
