Walter J. Pray Designated Head Of New La Habra-Lowell Hi School
Acting to assure a good start of the new La Habra-Lowell High School, the Board of Trustees of Fullerton Union High School and Junior College District has designated Walter James Pray as principal-elect, it was announced today by Stanley Warburton, Superintendent of the secondary districts.
Pray, who resides with his wife, Barbara, and daughter, Pamela, at 619 Valencia Mesa Drive, has been a member of the staff of the Fullerton Union High School since June 1946. Starting as an instructor in history and public speaking, Mr. Pray's leadership has been recognized with increasingly responsible positions in the program of adult education and summer sessions. Upon the untimely death of Michael Crotty, Pray was appointed Forum Moderator. For two years he worked with Logan W. Wheatley in the summer and evening administrative office, establishing and being the first principal-of Fullerton Evening High School in 1930. During the present year Pray is serving as Director of Fullerton Evening Junior College, having relinquished the evening high school principalship to John N. Reid.
A native of Iowa, Pray attended high-school and junior college in Webster City, transferring to San Bernardino Valley College where he received the associate of Arts degree in 1938. He graduated from University of Redlands in 1940. Pray has taken advanced graduate work at Claremont Graduate school and at the University of Southern California where he is currently enrolled in a program working toward the Doctorate in Education. Pray taught at Sturgea Junior high school at San Bernardino before coming to Fullerton. From 1941-45 he was in the United States Naval Reserve, serving as

knowledge of good business procedure gained from six years work in markets while earning his way through college.
Pray is active in community and church work, having played a vital part in Community Chest drives for North Orange County youth agencies. He has been a member of the Board and is president-elect of Fullerton Rotary club. His student announcers at local sports events as well as his work as Forum Moderator have made him familiar to many citizens of the area.
The thought in designation J. Pray as principal-time, according to Superi Warburton, is to assure educational planning as physical planning for the Habra-Lowell high school.
193 Californians Die of Carbon Monoxide Poison
Paul Scharrenberg, Director of Industrial Relations, today announced that fifty-five of California's fifty-eight county coroners reported that 192 persons died of carbon monoxide poisoning during 1951 and 1952 in apartment houses, hotels, dwellings, motels, or auto courts. Orange county had two fatalities. The deaths were attributed to unvented or defective gas appliances. Suicides were excluded. Scharrenberg explained that the figures are incomplete and made no reference to persons exposed to carbon monoxide who did not die but who were mentally or physically disabled.
Scharrenberg stated that since 1937 the State Housing Act has required the venting of gas appliances. The 1951 Session of the Legislature clarified the requirement, removed one exception thereto, and required that gas appliances in places of human habitation be approved by a nationally recognized testing agency.
The current Session of the Legislature has before it two bills that would permit unvented gas appliances. Scharrenberg stated that enactment of these bills would be a backward move in the protection of public health and safety. "Carbon monoxide," said Mr. Scharrenberg, "kills by making the victims unconscious so they cannot help themselves. It can come into a room from any defective, unvented gas appliance. The safeguards against this unseen enemy in places of human habitation should be maintained."

Traffic Hazards Endanger Kids, CHP Points Out
SACRAMENTO — California's bumper crop of healthy, active children coupled with climate that lets them play outdoors most of the year adds up to more chances for youngsters to get hurt in traffic, the California Highway Patrol noted today.
Since the danger is so great and children often don't know the safe thing to do, the Patrol said it was largely grownups' duty to look out for them.
Many accidents occur in which children are—legally wrong, but the Patrol pointed out that freedom from legal blame doesn't free a driver from the moral responsibility that older and more mature judgement carries.
The Patrol said safety instruction for children was chiefly a job for parents.
For example, if children customarily walk to and from school, parents should accompany them a few times to determine the safest route.
It's also up to parents to teach children where to play safely, how to cross streets, what traffic signs and signals mean and how to use skates, bikes and other wheel toys properly.
One of the most lasting ways to teach safety to children, the Patrol said, is for parents to set good examples for them.
If a policy of "do as I say, not as I do" results in an unsafe act by a child with subsequent death or injury in a traffic accident, the blame rests squarely with the parents, the Patrol concluded.
Eight Anaheim Residents Attend Whittier College
WHITTIER—Enrollment statistics show that eight Anaheim residents are among the 940 students registered at Whittier college for the spring term of the 1962-53 school year, it has been announced by college officials.
The registration figure, which includes students from 28 states, three foreign nations, Alaska and Hawaii, is only slightly lower than the 960 enrollment total reported last spring. In addition to the above total, 110 students are enrolled in late-afternoon and evening courses at the Foet school.
