Spring Flower and Garden Show Set to Open Apr. 15 in Pasadena One of the nation's most beautiful floral expositions, the Southern California spring flower and garden show, opens Wednesday, April 15, in the unique natural setting of the Morrison Horticultural center, Brookside park, Pasadena. The Crown City extravaganza, oldest event of its kind in the Southland, will thrill flower enthusiasts for five gala days through Sunday, April 19, with hundreds of spectacular exhibits carrying out the show theme, "As You Like It." Fortune in Blooms Manager G. Wyman Hope points out that a fortune in exotic blooms and spring blossoms of all kinds will be used to create the elaborate displays which visitors will view from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Indicative of the vast scope of the flower show, the entire main building will be devoted exclusively to orchids, bromelalds and other tropical plants. Here thousands of the world's most perfect orchid blooms will vie for the coveted American Orchid society silver trophy and numerous other valuable prizes. A highlight will be an "orchid grotto" presenting a practical growing display of these sophisticated blossoms around a seven-foot high waterfall. Expected to attract tremendous interest also will be a mammoth tropical entry featuring orchids from the Royal Hawaiian hotel, Honolulu. Lily Exhibit The patio of the show will serve as the background for an unu-sual lily exhibit centered around a formal fountain pool done in the classic French-Italian tradition. Behind this is the sylvan atmosphere of the five-acre hillside area will be a riotous array of spring flowers serving as settings and borders for dozens of individualized gardens and pools. These will depict many moods and themes, including Mexican, French and Oriental, and will provide the home owner with ideas for beautifying his own garden. The jam-packed flower show agenda will include daily one-hour lectures at 2:30 and 8 p.m. during which gardeners will dispense valuable advice to visitors in the vernacular of the layman. Cut Flower Display Rounding out the list of horticultural attractions will be a cut flower display, presenting a gorgeous panorama of spring blooms, and a flower arrangements exhibit creating both practical and bizarre effects and ranging in size from miniature to mammoth. Interesting sidelines at the renowned floral exposition will be provided by exhibitions of outstanding paintings and sculpture. Orrin A. White, whose works have won him nationwide acclaim, will show many of his colorful California and Mexico landscapes in the lecture room throughout the flower show. Nishan Toor, instructor of sculpture at John Muir college, will present a variety of garden sculpture—most of it for the first time. Noted in art circles here and abroad, Toor will feature subjects dealing with the world of nature. Reality of Death And Disease Challenged "In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death." This declaration from Proverbs (12:28) is the Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon in all Christian Science churches. "Are Sin, Disease, and Death Real?" is the subject. A selection from the Gospel of Matthew (9:24,25) tells how Jesus demonstrated the power of the Word in raising from death the daughter of Jalrus. When he came to the ruler's house, "He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose." Jesus proved the Principle, which heals the sick and casts out error, to be divine," declares Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Again she says, "Sin, sickness, and death must disappear to give place to the facts which belong to immortal man." Who’s Top Man with Femme Radio Fans? Why Arthur Godfrey, Natch! By TOM E. DANSON HOLLYWOOD—Caught in the exact center of a championship parking jam a few afternoons ago, I sat more or less patiently in my car listening to Arthur Godfrey and his gang distribute their well-known brand of entertainment over CBS radio. I've always been amazed at the hold Godfrey has on his tremendous listening audience so, just for luck, I did my own little Tom Danson survey. I turned off my own car radio to see just how many automobiles in hearing distance had on the Godfrey program. Result? Every faminine driver in that particular traffic pile-up that had a car radio was listening, while two out of five cars piloted by men were also tuned into Godfrey's chatter and Jeannette Davis' songs. No wonder the guy has won just about every radio honor that's being handed out these days. Back at the office I dug through some of the information I've collected over the years on Godfrey and his multifarious activities. The famous red head was born in New York back in 1903. Re-in Hasbrouck Helights, N.J., started work as an office boy 15 and made his radio debut an amateur show on a Baltin station in 1929. Amateur? Brother he has come a long way albeit another interesting point: Godfrey fans is that although daytime show is the biggest radio—they never hold a four-rehearsal. In the first place hold a rehearsal you'd have Godfrey on hand—and thur has a habit of showing up the CBS studios in New York seconds before airtime. Actually that marks the first time seen the cast of the program as the day before—so no rehearsal. Arthur, as everyone close to knows, can make a few notes the back of an envelope and couple of match book covers then lose the notes and ad libitum. And, by the way, Godfrey in planning to take five on six weeks off from his chores starting May 4, to undergo surgery as I reported before. I'm sure we all wish him the best of luck. Robert Q. Lewis will sub for Godfrey on the daytime show—while Garry Moore will do his "Godfrey's Talent Scouts" show. FINE FOR FEIN. Irving A. Fein has been named director of public relations, CBS radio, Hollywood. Announcement of the promotion was made in New York a couple of days ago by Louis Hausman, administrative vice-president for CBS radio. For the last year and a half Fein has been director of publicity and exploitation for the net in Hollywood. DOWN TV-RADIO ROW. All contracts signed by Robert Q. Lewis for nightclub and vaudeville engagements contain a "Godfrey clause" which gives Lewis the right to cancel out at any time to pinch-bit for the red head when he vacations or takes a leave of absence. In the last year, Lewis has invoked the clause once and will do it again when he takes over Godfrey's chores in May. The five lovely girls, all Polish DPs, who appeared on "The Wheel of Fortune" TV recently, attracted a total of 32 marriage proposals from viewers in the first week after the show, with each mail bringing in more. (For whatever sociologists care to make of it, most of the proposals were from farmers). Our American way of life could be destroyed with a smashing surprise attack on our home front!
