Commander Erwin E. Smith Retires After 36 Years of Service to U.S.
Commander Erwin E. Smith, who resides at 11111 E. Cerritos in Anaheim, has recently been retired from the armed services after 36 years.
Until his retirement, Commander Smith was actively associated with naval reserve surface division 11-5 at the naval training center at Los Alamitos, where he supervised seamanship and quartermaster classes.
His career at sea began in 1908 when at the age of 15 he went to sea as an apprentice with the merchant marine. He has served with the U. S. revenue cutter service (later called the U. S. coast guard) and in 1916, the commander joined the U. S. naval reserve force which had just been formed, and what is now the present U. S. naval reserve.
Commander Smith served in World War I as chief quartermaster with the Atlantic forces, and in World War II as a lieutenant (Jg). He assumed command of the U. S. S. Chalcedony in 1942—he had been the master of this same ship for ten years while in the merchant marine.
During the second world war, Commander Smith commanded the U. S. S. San Bernardino in which he established weather station Able off Kiska. He took part in the landings at Peleliu in the West Carolines, and participated in the initial occupation of Japan.
In 1949 the commander was released to inactive duty at which time he returned to the west coast and there became the master of a large seagoing yacht.

Assembly Bill To Give Vets Free Licenses
SACRAMENTO, - (CNS) - Totally disabled veterans in California will get free hunting and fishing licenses if a bill passed by the assembly becomes law.
Glenn E. Coolidge of Santa Cruz county, author of the bill (AB 922), told members of the lower house there are between ten and eleven thousand veterans in the state who fall in the totally disabled category.
He estimated that, if the ratio of fish and game licenses to the state's total population held true, about 1,000 veterans would get free licenses. He argued the State could well afford the gesture.

The Kwikset pension trust is a retirement plan for Kwiksetters when they reach age 65. Kwikset puts aside funds so that each Kwiksetter with 25 years service will continue to receive a sum of money equal to 25 per cent of his salary when he retires. For shorter service before reaching 65, less pensions are paid. Employees become eligible after a year's service at Kwikset. In addition the plan pays death benefits to beneficiaries in the event of the Kwiksetter's death.
The deferred profit sharing plan is in addition to the pension and cash profit sharing programs. It provides that a portion of the company's profit will be set aside each year to accumulate in an annuity for an employee until he reaches retirement age. Employees become eligible after a year's service. This plan also provides death benefits.
