El Mirador Hotel in Palm Springs Plans Master TV Antenna System BY TOM E. DANSON PALM SPRINGS — Ever on the alert to bring the finest of everything to their patrons, the Mother Held for Killing Husband SAN DIEGO (UP)—An 18-year-old mother of two, praligned here Tuesday on a charge of shooting her sailor husband to death, was quoted by police: "I didn't want to kill him. I only wanted to hit him like he hit me." Mrs. Roberta Ellis, 18, was arraigned on a manslaughter charge, while friends cared for the children, Steve, two years, and Cynthia, three months. Their father, James Richard Ellis, 20, of the San Diego Naval Air Station, was dead in his bed at home when police responded to a call from neighbors Monday night. Mrs. Ellis, they reported, was on the floor sobbing, a .22 calibre pistol beside her. Ellis was shot through the neck. The young wife, who was married when she was 15, was returned to jail until she can post $5000 ball. Her preliminary hearing was set for March 20. She and her husband were childhood sweethearts in Eureka, before their marriage. Mrs. Ellis' parents were summoned from Eureka to care for the couple's children. Civil Defense Ability Shown The effectiveness of a strong county civil defense organization major stockholders and managing director, Fred Clausen, of the fabulous El Mirador hotel here, have been huddling with plans to erect a huge master antenna which will bring television to all rooms and bungalows on the 21 acres of paradise. Recognizing the fact that television is of prime importance now in the every day life of "Mr. and Mrs. America," and that to date, Palm Springs is more or less an orphan of the media, officials of the hotel are determined to add this feature as soon as plans permit. Entertainment is not lacking at the El Mirador, Southern California's gathering spot for the cream of society, for there's always plenty to do. I thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing music of the Royal Hawaiian Serenaders as they play throughout the afternoon by the mammoth Olympic-sized swimming pool flanked by the tall majestic palm trees. Then, of course, there's the week-end dancing which is open to the public where, with a four-piece orchestra, Paul Shahin gives free instruction in all of the Latin dances such as rhumba, tango, mombo, etc. There's tennis, a putting green, badminton, shuffleboard — well, just about everything, and so now, even television is in mind. Glancin' with Danson Dept.: Enjoyed a brief "bull session" with friend Phil Harris, who had just turned in a neat 74 on the golf course ... heard that Bing Crosby shot a 96 on Tamarisk course on Saturday. Why Bing! Even I could keep up with you at that rate ... Ray Ryan, wealthy Texas ollman and one of the five in the RKO "deal" in one of the loudest sport coats yet. Roy Fitzgerald, president Civil Defense Ability Shown The effectiveness of a strong county civil defense organization to cope with natural disaster was clearly demonstrated during the recent floods in Del Norte and Humboldt counties, Maj. Gen. Walter M. Robertson, state director of civil defense, said today. Although the numerical strength of civil defense volunteers officially enrolled in the two counties is below the average of other areas of the state, particularly in the critical target areas, strong leadership was provided during the emergency by key personnel in both the Humboldt and Del Norte civil defense organizations. William Moonle, deputy sheriff in charge of the Klamath sub-station of the Del Norte county sheriff's office, said, "As a result of this experience of natural disaster our people now have a better understanding of what civil defense actually is and I'm sure that many who heretofore have not believed it important to enroll will take an active part in organized civil defense groups." Klamath was one of the most seriously affected unincorporated towns in the flood area where citizens were quickly formed into an effective disaster group under county civil defense leaders. OC 4-H Leaders To Hold Banquet A. J. McFadden of Santa Ana, well known agricultural leader, will be the guest speaker at the annual Orange County 4-H Leaders' banquet to be held Tuesday, Feb. 24 in the Santa Ana Community club house, reports Farm Advisor W. A. Humphrey. Actively concerned with agriculture for many years, McFadden is president of the California State Board of Agriculture. He has devoted 25 years to many local, state, and national organizations. Currently his list of organization activities includes first vice president and director of the California Walnut Growers association, director and member of the executive committee of the Southern California Edison company and of the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance company, trustee of Pomona college, and a member of the board of regents of the University of California. Internally, McFadden has to jail until she can post $5000 bail. Her preliminary hearing was set for March 20. She and her husband were childhood sweethearts in Eureka, before their marriage. Mrs. Ellis' parents were summoned from Eureka to care for the couple's children. Glancin' with Danson Dept.: Enjoyed a brief "bull session" with friend Phil Harris, who had just turned in a neat 74 on the golf course... heard that Bing Crosby shot a 96 on Tamarisk course on Saturday. Why Bing! Even I could keep up with you at that rate... Ray Ryan, wealthy Texas oilman and one of the five in the RKO "deal" in one of the loudest sport coats yet... Roy Fitzgerald, president, and one of the principal stockholders in the new El Mirador, admiring the present setting and looking for additional improvements... Mr. and Mrs. Bill Groves, who came out here from Chicago for the opening last December, and haven't left yet... and reports have it that Lucy and Desi will be seen here along the end of next month when they take a short vacation. They'd probably appreciate NOT seeing television. Heard a cute tape of Gussie Moran and "Mousie" Powell (Mrs. William Powell) doing a take-off of the Rosemary Clooney-Marlene Dietrich record of "Too Old to Cut the Mustard Any More." With a little practice, the gals will have something that could be marketed. Matt Dennis master-minded the "session" and furnished the piano accompaniment. DOWN TV-RADIO ROW ARB-Telequue, releasing audience viewing figures for the month of January, reports "I Love Lucy," "You Bet Your Life," and "Dragnet" as being the top-rated television shows of the month. "Wild Bill Hickok" appears to have the enviable distinction of undisputed favorite among the small fry... The incomparable Hildegarde, cafe society's plushies pet of the last two detaches, opens the Terrace Room of the Statler in Los Angeles this coming Friday "Hilde," who laughingly calls herself America's "Chantootsie," will appear with her own orchestra directed by Robert Norris. The ne plus ultra in fashion. Hildegarde is the girl who parlayed a $29.95 evening dress, a piano and a voice into the greatest supper club act in show biz. She's now on what she refers to as her "grass roots kid."
